recommend an 18

My fav right now is Highland Park 18.

Others: Glenfiddich 18 "Ancient Reserve"
Glenlivet 18....I prefer the Glenfiddich to this though.

Here is a scotch blog I read from time to time. There is a lot of info on here so I just read a couple of reviews to get an idea of what I want to try. I try not to spend more the $100 on a bottle. Which is why I like the Highland Park 18. Its a good value....less expensive than a lot of other 18s and better than most IMO. The Highland Park 15 I believe is the best value around. $50 and you get most of the complexity and aging of the 18.

I've never tried A.

The Balvenie is an excellent scotch. And I'm not very big on scotch, but it's good.

FWIW, bourbons aren't the Amrican version of whisky, they are the Kentucky/Tennessee version of whisky.

A quick 'Oban 32' google shows 9 Franklin..to hell with that.

9 bills will buy plenty of good liquor, wine, and brew..you can load a trunk at a Matherne's sale or a trip to H-Town Spec's main location on Smith.

I had my first bottle of Laphroaig about two weeks ago. It does have a distinct herbal / licorice flavor, atributable to the peat fire that the barley is roasted on..

It's an acquired taste.. Not everyone that picks it up even wants to smell it.. but I enjoy it while most people do not.

It also has a different buzz.. It's very sedative and not something I'd drink when I'm out partying..

[quote]Whisky is a shortened form of usquebaugh, which English borrowed from Gaelic (Irish uisce beatha and Scottish uisge beatha). This compound descends from Old Irish uisce, "water", and bethad, "of life" and meaning literally "water of life". It meant the same thing as the Latin aqua vîtae which had been applied to distilled [quote]drinks since early 14th century. Other early spellings include usquebea (1706) and iskie bae (1583). In the Irish Annals of Clonmacnoise in 1405, the first written record of whisky appears describing the death of a chieftain at Christmas from "taking a surfeit of aqua vitae". In Scotland, the first evidence of whisky production comes from an entry in the Exchequer Rolls for 1494 where malt is sent "To Friar John Cor, by order of the king, to make aquavitae".

/usquebaugh..... "water of life".

I like that

since no one really answered the original question and just BSed about what scotches they have sipped I would say go with the balvenie, I personally like the portwood or the signature a little better, but all are good.

I like glenlevit and have really like the other thing.

I don't think the brand matters as much as the specific flavors you are looking for. I am not much on peat flavors, but some people love it.

Balvenie ages some of there in port wood and it has a distinct flavor that I have enjoyed at times.

As for cost don't get wrapped up in it too much, or age to a certain extent. Sure, a 30yo may be smoother, but if it doesn't have the notes you like then it is worthless to you.

For the common person drinking going above 18years really doesn't make much sense. Once you get the taste for scotch you will taste the difference in blends and single malts. I didn't believe I would ever figure that out but I have. Even though I will catch hell for this, blends are smoother at a lower age and present a more affordable option if you just want a good drink.
