I like Laphroaig. But as far as a regular/everyday scotch, I think MaCallan 12 year is more then sufficient.

Even though I will catch hell for this, blends are smoother at a lower age and present a more affordable option if you just want a good drink.

I agree with this. However....and this is the debate I have with people quite often.....smoother does not necessarily mean better. I think there needs to be a complexity that challenges your taste buds in order for you to want to come back to it over time. Many people interpret these "unusual" flavors to a drink not being smooth. This holds true for not only whisky, but beer, coffee....women....all the good things in life.

+1, but most people who start out drinking scotch always complain about lack of smoothness. I think until you get over that, keep it simple.

About $90 per bottle. The 12 yr. old is about $40.

When you're talking 18 yr old scotch, they are all around 90-100. I usually drink the first from a good bottle and then step down to 12-15 yr old stuff after that. And I usually only drink 3 max...and that's a rarity. I can't remember last time I had more than 3 scotches....but there is photographic evidence.

I was out drinking at the Cove with a friend tonight, and remembered this thread. Pulled out the old iPhone, read up and tried the Highland Park 18. Bartender gave a nod of approval, and have to say, it was very enjoyable. I usually drink American or Canadian, and when I wander through the Scotch aisle generally stick to JW Black. This was some good stuff-complex, without being too peaty, and pretty damn smooth. Thanks for the recommendation Dallas!
