I just moved to the area and am looking primarily for recommendations for good Texas BBQ/Mexcican/steakhouses (others would be good to) in the Dallas or surrounding area. Thanks in advance.

See my mexi recs in the other thread.

I'm sure others are more qualified to make steak and bbq recs.

Sonny Bryan's is the local big thing in Dallas. I'm not too big of a fan of it. It's ok.

If you want great BBQ, drive south about 20 minutes out of Austin to Lockhart, TX. Eat at Kreuz Market or Smitty's Market.

Also, I just did some research. My favorite Taqueria in Houston also had locations in Dallas. Look up Taqueria Arandas-cheap, good, fast.

The real bbq guys don't care for Sonny's either. I know there are some hole in the wall places around here but I don't eat bbq.

Ha...damnit. I wish you did. I'm a big BBQ guy, I've had Sonny Bryan's and some place that was in Uptown too. I wasn't a fan of either.

I'll ask some of my carnivorous buddies where they eat tasty dead flesh.

Sadly, Dallas has a dearth of good BBQ. Sammy's (near downtown), and Peggy Sue's (Highland Park) are the best I've tried. Baby Back Shak (south Dallas) is good as well.

Dallas excels here. The best, IMO, are:

Del Frisco's
Bob's
Nick & Sam's
III Forks
Perry's
Pappas

Of those, my favorite is Del Frisco's, but it's all a matter of taste.

Hudson is dead on with the steak recs. For BBQ I like Peggy Sue's in Snyder Plaza and Backcountry BBQ on Greenville Ave.

The Angry Dog has kick arse hot dogs and burgers.

How is Bakers Ribs next door?

Esparza's is good Mexican in Grapevine I believe?

Campisi's pizza is awesome, IMO

Jake's for hamburgers

Snuffer's cheese fries if you want to simultaneously orgasm in your mouth, shite your pants, and have a heart attack.

Is the Dancing Marlin still open in deep ellem? I know my spelling is off, but we had a great experience there a couple of years ago. Perfect on everything.

edit: we actually went to the French Room the night before and Mansion on Turtle Creek the previous night, and had a better meal at Dancing Marlin.

If you're looking for BBQ, hit Mike Anderson's on Harry Hines across from the hospital.

I find it's the best in town.

If you're feeling adventurous (i.e., very hungry), I recommend ordering the Scooby Doo sandwich. It's legit.

Go get a Mexican cocktail at Hook Line and Sinker. I just recently moved back to BR after living in Dallas for 3.5 years and that's about the only thing I miss food wise. I miss Campisi's on Mockingbird too.

Yep, still open. Really good casual place. I'm a big fan.

I'm going to assume that's hyperbole. You're comparing two 5-star restaurants that could hold their own anywhere in the US with a casual sandwich place. That's like comparing Restaurant August with Mothers.

No question about that...there is no comparison in what is offered, and French Room and Mansion were awesome. We actually traveled to Dallas for a concert, and ended up making it more of a dining tour.

We just had a top to bottom great experience at Dancing Marlin...maybe they were just really on their game that day. Because we are both in the business, we are usually very critical about the details, and they were hitting on all cylinders. We were just very impressed with the operation.

There is something to be said about "expectations"..we had very high expectations for these two 5 star restaurants...and they met their expectations. Dancing Marlin just exceeded our expectations, and by alot, and that is what stood out about the experience.

I can agree with this.

The dining room was just beautiful. The food was great.

We stayed at the Augustus, so it was also very easy to hit the hotel bar, and then go to the room.
