there is a poster on the OT who insist that is normal for bartenders to automatically serve you a double when you just order a regular drink. that one should specify if they want a single.
what say you food board peeps?
has my alcohol tolerance become over the top now that i can't tell i'm drinking doubles everywhere i go or is this person just out there with this statement?

Singles are worthless.

Good barkeeps will make you a good drink, even when you don't specify anything. Shitty bar keeps are shitty.

You mean serve and charge the customer accordingly?
No, that's not customary as far as I'm aware, or at least not at any establishment I frequent.
There's always those places you know will "hook you up", but that doesn't seem like what you're talking about here, is it?

Then he's an idiot. I bartended in college all over town and I've never heard that.
If I in fact did order a "crown n coke" at a bar and I received my tab and I had been charged for doubles I would not pay it. I ordered a single and if you gave me a double that's on you. I don't like feeling like somebody is trying to cheat me or get over on me. That's what that is.

I see this poster is TigahRag...
His point is that you drank it so you should pay for it.
I would make this analogy.
If I ordered a shrimp pasta at a restaurant and ate all of it and said it was great and now I'd like my check. If the waiter brought my check to me and I saw I had been charged double that amount because the chef threw in double the amount of shrimp then I'd laugh in his face. I have no idea how many shrimp are supposed to come in that pasta and I just ordered the pasta, not a double serving of shrimp.
At a bar, if I asked for a single and it seemed strong I'd just assume the bartender had a heavy hand. I would have no reason to assume that I was getting charged for a double when I ordered a single.

That thread had me torn on what I thought.
I agree with you and bbap though.. You should not be charged for something that you did not ask for just because they decided to give it to you. That's not fair and that's stealing from people.
Someone mentioned Sullivan's as an example of a place that automatically makes doubles. This is how I see it.. Sullivan's is known for expensive drinks. You know that going in there. If a drink is $10 on the menu, and just so happens to be a double, that's great. You know you're not necessarily overpaying. But if a bar offers doubles AND singles .. and they're giving you doubles when you don't specify, that's shady!

The bartender should ask you if you want a double, not automatically give it to you.

Doesn't sound like you're torn at all
It's wrong...no question about it.

Yeah true.
I guess I just mean if a bar's drinks are expensive regardless so they pour with a heavy hand, I have NO issue with that! But then again, who would?

Fixed it. No more evidence if you edit that last post

i knew the answer. i just needed to show someone she is living in the clouds on this topic.
LL, if they just make a stiff drink then it's a stiff drink. it's how they make them. if you can still order a double and they put double the liquor then that's their double.

A better question would be if a bartender gave you top shelf when you asked for a vodka cran and you wanted well. Most of the time bartenders will ask what type of liquor you want if you don't specify.
I've never heard of anyone expecting a double and not asking for it.
