No shite. And "american shrimpers" fricking hate them. They work harder and cheat harder.

I know around here many oyster fishermen are croatian and shrimpers are Viets. A croat girl I know from Belle Chasse told me her dad said, "I don't care if you marry a black guy but you end up with a Vietnamese and you are out of the family, shunned".

Both groups have tight family knots and stay in groups.

I know, first they couldn't afford their baker, then started cutting back. I ate there almost once a week. We took a three weeks off to try other places around the city and then go back and it was gone.

If Shishkabob house closes down I'll really be upset.

Yep. Best oysters I have ever had were from Tom down the Belle Chase Highway. He could pick a sack and tell you how clean or salty they would be.

Another Katrina fatality.

I haven't had any vietnamese food since I moved away a couple months ago. This thread, combined with the lingering cravings from watching Top Chef last week are about to make me go try a viet place up here.

going off what was said in the "Vietnamese in NOLA" documentary on PBS. Ok I was wrong, but there are a lot on the westbank and in NOLA east.

If you are going off of the documentary, then you MAY be right. The documentary and you said largest CONCENTRATION of vietnamese outside of Vietnam. That is most likely true. LINK LINK

As for the amount in the general area, basing the population off of the Mary the Queen of Vietnam Church it is around 20,000 LINK

I've seen SoLa vietnamese food featured on National Travel/Cooking shows about 6-8 times in the past 3-4 years.

In the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Vietnamese Americans have accounted for between 45-85% of the shrimping business in the region. However, the dumping of imported shrimp, ironically from Vietnam, has affected their source of livelihood

I'm not sure if the 85% figure is right but I would say it was in the range of 50% or more. It depends on where you go. Texas to Alabama has huge concentrations but certain areas still have a lot of white shrimpers.

They got ahead with hard work and like another poster said a lot of cheating too. They are masters at evading taxes and getting help from the government. They also pool money together from several families to pool resources for boats and money. This is something that white americans don't do much of (working together).

The best was that he kept trying to argue his point and then denigrated the judges in his confessionals. What a turd. You could tell by the way they presented the challenge that they wanted them to cook the style of vietnamese food found in the area, not his boyfriends grandmas cousins version of marinara.

My top 3 in Houston

1. Pho Binh (the famous trailer)
2. Pho Saigon
3. Huynh

There are loads of places in West Houston I have not tried so others may have more suggestions.
