Well that was quick. Guess they can look at the bright side. They can write that loss off for a few years.
How's the Pizzalota joint on Perkins doing? Not sure if I see that thing working either.

Pat's was egregiously bad, but that location is putrid. What an obscure part of the city to have a seafood restaurant.

Not really .. We'll just agree to disagree on this one ..

Look i have my own beef with demp... BUT pats closed for sucking and being gross. Demp had issues for me but it wasn't that.
Oh and they had $17 gumbo. But if that's your thing

You kidding ? Pat's was awful the last time I ate there in Henderson 10 years ago .. I knew that shite hole would suck ..

Pat's failed because it was run by cooks who believe they are restaurateurs. Pat's restaurant concept was based on hope, the past, ego, and warm and fuzzy feelings. RIP

Everytime we go back to lake Charles my aunt and uncle take us to pats and pay for it.
I don't complain because I'm not paying, however it's a joke what they charge and the portions
Last time I went I got the special which was like $22 and had one 4-5inch blackened redfish filet with a scoop of étouffée on top and a cup of gumbo.
I had to stop to "get gas" on way home and scarf down a 7/11 hot dog and jerky before I got back to the car Lol
It was a joke.

I hate to see any local business struggle, but I'm not surprised by this.

Well....just heard this joint was shutting down. Not surprising.

How do yall feel about the location? Close enough to attract the Essen crowd at lunch time?
Posted on 9/15/15 at 1:06 pm to Gugich22
I think it's a poor location. I can't really explain why though.
I find that BR is weird about that kind of thing.
It's kinda like where they're putting the new Superior. Many restaurants have failed in that spot, but a place like Superior will kill it. Same for the area Rum House is in. I don't think just any ole restaurant could have opened there.
Not saying Dempsey's is "any ole restaurant". I just could see it suffering in the PM there just like it did by Towne Centre, and then you wonder if the AM crowd is enough to hold the place up. No idea. I don't own restaurants so I'm talking out of my arse

Definitely. When I worked on Essen, we went Las Palmas and the deli next door a lot. Have former coworkers that drive from Florida Blvd to eat in that area.

Panera Bread seems to do well, right down the road.

I agree with the clown.
LL does have a valid point about the dinner crowd. Dempsey's certainly comes across as primarily a lunch crowd restaurant, but minor menu changes could help with that. I'm talking about a simple menu redesign, to pretty it up and increase its value perception. Basically, instead of a list of menu items, the items would have descriptions, basically like most full-service restaurants do.
But my biggest concern for that location is the invisibility factor. That building has been sitting vacant for a while and it's look hasn't dramatically changed, so over the years, people just stop paying attention to it, like they don't see it, like it's invisible.
So my advice to anyone putting a restaurant there, please do yourself a favor and be noticeable, and get peoples attention. Change the look of the exterior. Redo the landscaping. Paint the walls. Add lighting. A big arse flashy sign. Whatever. Just get people's attention, otherwise so many people will just drive by without seeing it.
Frankly, this is one area that the Restaurant Impossible show failed at doing next door with the pizza joint. It needed a new look that would make people passing by pay attention and take notice that something is different.

To be fair that place failed because the owner was a stubborn old curmudgeon and a colossal a-hole, not because of bad food or even location.

I think the owner played a part, but I think location huge too. Even before people really knew he was an a-hole, the place was never very busy. I remember when it had been open a couple months, this board was RAVING about the place, but it always looked dead when I'd pass. It didn't seem to become common knowledge that he was an a-hole until later.
Sure, there are successful places just down the street. But there certainly seems to be an art to where you open based on what kind of restaurant you are--at least in BR. Langland is right about standing out. Dempsey's is solid -- but Dempsey's is not the type of place to invest a lot into "standing out" aesthetically. Just look at how drastically different the building looks now that City Pork is there. Dempsey's is just solid seafood at a low price. No frills.
I personally don't see why they would do any better a mile down Jefferson than they did by Towne Center. I don't think they'd be dead all the time or anything.. but I don't think it would be any better than before.
