I am thinking about installing a woodfired/gas combo oven in my backyard? If anyone has one, do you use it? Was it worth putting it in?

I would love to do pizzas obviously, but really want to use it regularly for roasted fish, chicken, veggies.

8k for a grill above a fire.

Y'all can keep that. They look nice and all, but for 8k I'm getting a brick pizza oven built in my yard.

Was just watching a video on them last night. This is Kenji Lopez's favorite that he tested.

I looked at those and they are interesting, but I really would like a gas/wood hybrid option.

Debating between doing a full hearth oven (probably $5-10k) or one of the portable options that can do true Neapolitan pies like the Pizza Party gas/wood combo (~$2k). The PP gets great reviews on a bunch of the pizza making forums and heats up quickly (weighing only 150lbs), but is not as nice looking as the full brick ovens.

Kenji's article is what spurred this. I almost bought one of the ones he recommended, but they are too small and I want something nicer. He wanted to keep his review to the truly portable ones that came in under $600.

I have a couple of friends who have wood fired pizza ovens. If you like to entertain folks, they are awesome, as you can turn out one hell of a lot of pizzas in a relatively short amount of time....only takes a couple of minutes to cook a pizza.

the negative is that is just too damn hot a job to do most of the time in the south, so your use is really limited to late fall and winter. also, it is entirely too much trouble to light and get the thing hot enough to cook if you are only doing it for a couple of people.

I do think they look damn nice and can add to the value of your house.

Do you have a gas grill now? If you're doing this solo and want a separate oven then ignore this, but doing this on a gas grill or Kamado is extremely easy and just as enjoyable. You can get some bricks to line your gas grill and make a pouch of wood chips and enjoy the same quality.

Honestly sounds like you would be better off with a built in pellet oven/grill, ease of gas with taste of wood.

I have a green egg, a Backwoods cabinet smoker, and a weber kettle. I was thinking about a gas grill, but the only thing that adds over the egg is convenience. I can get the egg lit for grilling pretty quick. Getting it ready to go for roasting is more of a chore and takes more time than I have during the week. The egg is also not a great pizza oven. This is why I started looking into woodfired ovens with gas assist over a gas grill. It gives me more options. The "mobile" ones (like the pizza party which only weighs 150lbs) gets up to temp in 20 min which complements the BGE in that it offers a platform to confidently/easily roast chicken & fish at high temps during the week as well as allows for a truer Neapolitan pizza experience.

The larger residential forno bravo's (1500-2500lbs) can heat up in 45 minutes with gas assist and can use gas and wood at the same time. These look so much nicer than the mobile ones, have larger cooking areas, and are true Wood Fired Ovens, but they cost a LOT more than the mobile ones and you lose the convenience factor.

I also have a problem with a cooking gear.
