I thought I read Middendorf's has gone downhill? Plus most people in my party have already been there. Still might hit it up.

If you get the catfish, I recommend the thick cut. Their thin cut to me is like eating catfish flavored chips

Hymel's in Convent was recommended to me.

Hymel's is a good choice, off the beaten tourist path and full of local color. Try to go on the nights they have entertainment. You can buy gas there too.

Houmas House is a great Plantation home with 3 different restaurants serving food all day. That might be a good stop to get out of the city.

Looked at their site - what a fantastic place. I could kick my self for never having gone there when I lived on the Northshore. Mad enough now to dig up a sprinkler head.

Westbank brah - Salvo's and Perino's.

Do they wait on you at Salvo's or is just counter service? I can't tell from their website, but I see they have counter service from a photo on Yelp.

House of Seafood in Bush
Charlie's in Springfield
White's in Husser

If you go to Hymel's DO NOT get the catfish -- they use frozen Vietnamese basa catfish instead of fresh Louisiana catfish

I am a big fan of the catfish chips, onion sticks, gumbo, and bloody Mary's at Spahrs. They have a new regional manager and I've noticed a big improvement since he took over

Middendorfs is the most obvious, of course, and still my favorite.

Since nobody's mentioned it, however, I will throw out Voleo's in Lafitte. Owner is actually from the Paul Prudhome culinary family tree. He's got German in his family and includes a couple of German dishes on the menu as well. Neat, if not a tad bit grungy, little joint and better food than the big place De Famile' you need to pass on the way to it.

You HAVE to come over to Bay St Louis for a day. Drive up old 90 from the base of the high rise, it's a beautiful trip. What and where to eat is another thread, or when I have more time. You won't be disappoint.

I wish I could figure out what the Blind Tiger is trying to be. It's a cool place, but their menu is all over the place and oddly very limited at the same time.

Well they advertise that they don't have a freezer, so I think they're trying to grab the quick casual eaters. Chalkboard menus, one with specials, are all you get. Great place to grab a beer and fries. They usually have a good fish taco and sandwich on the menu.

To the OP...

200 N. Beach has a great bar for a real drink. Oysters and peel and eat shrimp are on point at the bar.

Trout dishes, I get Almondine, and fried seafood (and hamburgers, steaks, spin dip, meatball poboys...) at Trapanis...good bar upstairs as well.

Back patio for drinks at the Sycamore house. Best pizza in town. Food is great IMO (they always have a couple great scallop dishes on the menu), atmosphere can either be great or horrible depending on you and your party's mood.

Lil Joes - boiled and fried seafood, great poboys.

Mockingbird - shot or two of espresso. Surprisingly, or not, that'll change the mood in a hurry.

Spahr's & Middendorfs

Both are average with a slight edge to Middendorfs.

I'd go to Nancys or Big Als in Houma before those two. Crabby Crab in Lockport is good too.

For great food and atmosphere, try the Cabin Restaurant near River Road in Sorrento.
It's old slave quarters converted into a restaurant.

quote:

one of the ten original slave dwellings of the Monroe Plantation. It is approximately 180 years old. ...even the spider webs of 100 years ago are still clinging to the ceiling. The walls are papered with ancient newspaper fixed to the walls with a mixture of flour and water.

two room slave dwelling from the Welham Plantation with its original roof and walls. It is approximately 140 years old.

The main dining room built onto the back of the Cabin was designed to resemble a garconnier (the visiting bachelor’s quarters on a River Road plantation) opens via French doors to a brick courtyard surrounded by two more slave cabins, both from the Helvetia Plantation, and dominated by the Schoolhouse, the restored first Black Catholic School in Louisiana, built in 1865 by the sisters of the Sacred Heart. Back in the main dining room, the roof is supported by four massive beams that were manufacturer’s rejects obtained for a bottle of Old Crow bourbon.
