Just bought a 15 lb brisket from Rouses. Cut open one corner of the wrapper and was hit with the rotten egg smell. Is that bad?

I doubt Brisket is bad, is any of the meat gray and not red? Was it vacuum sealed? Beef is usually not going to be bad if in date and cryovac has not lost seal.

I've heard of vac sealed pork smelling bad, and even had it myself a few times. I've been told just wash it off and it's still fine; it's just because it's been vac sealed. I've never gotten sick. Never had beef do it though.

I know its a pain but I would go back and swap it out. They will tell you to not even bring it in and they will give you another one.

Rouses closes at 10 though so I can't take it back until the AM. I'm going to try and wash it off. I've seen ppl saying on here they've gotten bad meat from Rouses lately. If I take it back I'm getting my money not the piece of beef that was right next to this fart beef.

Man don't do that. If it's bad you can't "wash it off"

Gotcha. Well I have gotten great meat at Rouses so I would just swap it. I would bet they go in back and make sure you get close to 0 day. At least their 0 day.

Rouses on 190 on Covington is pretty bad.

If you got it from that one, I wouldn't doubt one bit that it was bad.

I just go there for birthday cards.

this - i took a few vac sealed ribs back to the store once. the meat guy said it's normal. rinse it off and let it sit for a bit. if it still smells after about 20 minutes of sitting it might have gone bad.

That's just aged beef. IWEI

Seriously, I have kept briskets that were in cryovac packaging for up to eight weeks in the refrigerator and they were fine.

Bring it back. I had the same problem with the Rouse's in Ponchatoula. Took the meat out of the plastic the day after I bought it and almost got knocked over by the shite/egg smell.
Will not buy meat from Rouses again.

I've done quite a few (a lot) of briskets and bunches of pork ribs that have come in cryovac packages. Mostly from HEB but some from Kroger, Food Town and ribs once or twice from Wal-Mart.

I have never opened a package that smelled bad. I would return it and have no further relationship with said store if that did happen.

It's never happened to me but I don't imagine eating bad food is very much fun.

I'm a butcher. Do not eat it. Take it back. Sometimes primals get vacuum sealed incorrectly and go bad.
