Making your own BBQ sauce

Recently my Uncle visited from Oklahoma. He said the big thing up there is making your own BBQ sauce.
He says there are serious competitions, etc. People take that shite seriously like we take jambalaya, gumbo, etc cookoffs.
Any one here a serious BBQ sauce maker?

I've never tried it, but my brother in law makes a mean BBQ sauce.
He told me to just start with ketchup then add brown sugar, molasses, spices, garlic, onions, aromatics, etc. and just play around with it.

Thats not "making your own BBQ sauce". I was thinking along the same lines. My Uncle says its down to making your own red sauce (ketchup), etc, and go from here.

According to who? Unless their rules in the sauce competition state that, then I'd definitely recommend starting with chili sauce and/or ketchup. I mean, whats next? You have to grow your own tomatoes and cook it over a wood fire?
Ive sold my sauce to plenty of people in the past. Just never looked into marketing it on a large scale. So I think its pretty good. And it starts with chili sauce too.

you can start with tomato sauce from a can and not be too far behind ketchup
I prefer to make it that way to control the sugar
once you add vinegar and brown sugar it's about the same anyway
nobody uses fresh tomatoes to make BBQ sauce
