Oh tequila! When I like it, I love it! Then, I drink it to the point of never wanting it again. I want to be able to like tequila and am led to understand that it is just as complex (or at least similar) as whiskey.
FWIW I generally like silver tequila over gold.
So FBD: tell me more about tequila, what do you like and why?

Good Reposado. No lime, no salt, and no chaser.

Eta: Corralejo Reposado is a great one.

The fact that you call it "gold" lets me know out of the gate you have not had much great tequila.

Yes, it is great and complex. It is the only alcohol that is not technically a downer. But good tequila is generally more expensive than other comparable liquors. Also, since the per bottle American tax was lifted a couple years back, good tequila has flooded in but its distributed a little funny.

My rec to you would be to go buy an añejo, and spend about $40+. A decent one in that range is Corso. All of it comes from the same region of Jalisco, and much of it even from the same distilleries, so you won't notice in the brands much. You generally get what you pay for outside of Patron.
As far as silvers go (unaged tequila), Milagro and Innocente are the best I've had.

Also, forgot to add, and I cannot stress this enough:
Whatever you buy should say "100% agave". Do not buy "made with agave". And there is no such thing as blue agave.

If you must buy cheap tequila, I would recommend the El Jimador Reposado. Its 100% agave and really solid for the price.

Tequila makes me destroy property.

Milo,
I do not know shite! I am as ignorant as it gets. My brother just brought over a bottle of 1800 "silver" it's ok. I'll try an añejo. I don't mind spending money. I am a scotch drinker so I get the game.

1800 is not bad for the money.

Fyi, silver is right out of the distiller. Reposado is aged in oak barrels for up to 6 months (iirc), and añejo id 6+ months usually no more than a year. The oak mellows the agave sugar bite, and is generally understood to make it smoother.

I would take your añejo and try it over 2 ice cubes, try it neat, try it over ice with a squeeze of lime, and try it over ice with a squeeze of orange (this is the best!).

Be aware that if you come to like it, and you order it at a restaurant on the rocks or similar, you'll get some funny looks and people will assume you are here to PARTY

What else should they assume, other than mutually assured destruction of property?

Good advice from Btrtigerfan. Corzo is a great product and their añejo offering is highly drinkable. Just like whiskey, their are very affordable mid - market products as well as more expensive high-end labels. Espolón Añejo is a good entry-level tequila for whiskey/bourbon drinkers because of its aging process and flavor profile.

I'm a fan of tequila, but this is not true.

Pour a nice shot, splash a good bit of Tabasco in it and slam it.

Prairie Fire.

Of course I'll have a big shot of cold vodka mixed with NyQuil and slam it too.

Flu Shot.

If you appreciate scotch then you should also look into Mescal (from Oaxaca) & Sotol (from Chihuahua). Both possess enjoyable flavors similar to tequila and a smokeyness derivative of scotch.

Sotol is wonderful, but it can be difficult to find.

I pick this stuff up any time I see it:

Back in my tequila days, I really came to appreciate the Lapis and Chinaco brands. My go to's would be the Lapis Anejo and the Chinaco Reposado. As I'm writing this I remembered I just got a box of A Fuente Short Story's that will go fantastically smooth with either. It might be time to go pick up a bottle. Very good for sipping.

Thanks for the advice giys. I now have at least a place to start researching. I will say that the 1800 I had last night was good at least to me. 100% agave seems to be the way to go so I'll keep a look out for that. Do yall drink your tequila cold, " freezing" or room temperature?
