Does anyone know if this place is any good?

It depends on your definition of good, and the day. We've had less than good luck there, but it's probably one of the best places to eat in Pike County. First time we went, 3 or 4 years ago, I got their specialty, a catfish topped with etouffee. The etouffee was pale and not to my liking. The second time we went, last year, I ordered a filet mignon. After I'd nearly finished my salad, the server returned to our table and told me that they were out of filets. There has not been a third visit.

Did the Sommelier have any good suggestions of wine to go with the filet?
I would like to visit this place just for giggles. I have alot of family from McComb and that place just amazes me to no end.

My definition of good is Middendorf's. What are the best days?

They're just open three days, I think, and I've tried two of them.

How old is this place? Don't you know, the only good places to eat in Summit is the Golden Hushpuppy or the soul food place at the bottom of the hill.

Golden Hushpuppy has gone out of business.

Let me add: One of the really interesting things about this board is the diversity of opinion. It is seriously interesting to see different opinions of the same restaurants, and, often, the same dishes.
For this, I thank all of you.

I hate that the Golden Hushpuppy didn't make it, too. It was a bright spot in the fairly dismal home-owned restaurant scene in Pike County.
Edited to add that Doretha's is the "soul food place" that CDawg mentioned.

I'm going to have to try this out next time I'm traveling through there. Has it been around a while? What do you suggest I get?

Cool. Never knew the name. I just know about 17 years ago I could get a to-go plate of Red Beans & Rice, Cornbread, Catfish filet, and slaw for about $3-$4. That was the best little jewel around Pike County.
In old downtown Magnolia there use to be a place where I could get a catfish dinner for $3 bucks. 2 filets, fries and roll. I want to say it was Magnolia Cafe. But again, this was about '93 or '94.

I just checked it out. It may be the same people but it's not the same location as I use to go. I went to a place on Robb Street just past downtown headed west at the bottom of the hill. The place I went to was a rundown shack and you ordered what they had that day. I just know Wednesday was Red Beans day.
***The Mallard still open? Maybe the last time I was there it was called Dixie Springs Cafe.

Guys, sorry to thread hijack, but help me remember the name of a little place that primarily serviced fried seafood located between Percy Quinn State Park and McComb. I have Catfish Shack stuck in my head, but that doesn't sound right.

Yeah, thats it. We used to always go eat there one of the nights we were at the park during summer vacation. It has been many years, but I thought the catfish was pretty good back then.

Mr. Whiskers: closed January 1 or about that time.
Dixie Springs Cafe: only time I went, I ordered something that had hollandaise sauce on it. I complained about the taste, and they told me that it was from a mix. Haven't been back.
Dorothea's: this is the only soul food place I've heard about. I'm sure there are more, but lots of locals eat there.
Magnolia: the only restaurant I know of there is Mercedes Mariposa. It's worth a visit to talk with Mercedes, and to hear her story.

really? I knew the Allen's. Were they still the owners?
Posted on 2/9/10 at 6:49 pm to Cdawg
I don't know who owned it, but we drove past a few weeks ago, and it looked like some work was being done on the building.

I googled restaurant reviews for McComb, MS and ended up here in familiar territory on TigerDroppings. Too Crazy.
Anyway, I'm bringing a group of clients to quail hunt at Thornhill on Monday and we'd plan to stop at the Dinner Bell McComb afterwards, then I found out the Dinner Bell is closed on Mondays. What's ya'll best suggestion for an alternate?

Unless you want fast food or Ruby Tuesday's you're out of luck. I hope that there's a hidden gem that I haven't found, but I'm afraid that there isn't. For a decent meal we generally head to Louisiana.
Oh! I forgot that there is a chain steak place, Santa Fe Cattle Company. If you like peanut shells on the floor, that's the place you're looking for!
