where would you go.

I am going to San Diego for a wedding this weekend. We'll be staying in Encitas. I'd like to head downtown for lunch before heading to the hotel. Any suggestions on where to go?

Anything around Ranco Bernado? I don't have a clue about this area at all. The hotel we're staying at is here. I'll have to find some place to eat lunch Saturday and dinner Sunday. We'll be going to the LSU Alumni crawfish boil on Sunday I believe.

depending on what kind of food I'm in the mood for...Searsucker, Bice or La Puerta. Maybe even Oceanaire.

Is San Diego known for Mexican? I have never been and just assume seafood would be legit over there.

old town has the authentic Mexican places but that is about 20 minutes from downtown area

Little Italy has some nice hole in the wall type places, very good food

Gaslamp is touristy

Take a boat cab to Coronado for some good eats as well especially as you get closer to Coronado

Forget Gaslamp...drive to Chula Vista (maybe 10-12 mins from downtown) and eat fish tacos at Mariscos El Pescador. Yes, it's a taco truck...in the parking lot of a ToysRUs by the train tracks & interstate. No dining room, just a canopy/tarp. But best damn fish taco I ever ate, plus a bunch of other delicious things like ceviche tostadas.

Searsucker is the best restaurant in that area. Not sure what type of food you are looking for though. Bandar does a solid job. They aren't trying to reinvent the wheel, but it's good solid Persian food. La puerto is worth a stop if nothing more than the Margaritas. If you're from NOLA and eat at places like Peche and GW Fins Fairly regular I would skip Oceanaire. It's not bad but you have better in your back yard.

I think the lady wants to eat Mexican. I see downtown is close to the airport. I'd like to walk around before heading to the hotel. I don't see much around the hotel though as far as restaurants and bars are concerned.

Little Italy is between Gaslamp & the airport...plenty of food choices there. Underbelly has great ramen in LI.

You seem like a guy who would appreciate carne asada fries, a San Diego specialty. Lucha Libre turns out a good version

....yes, these are loaded fries topped w/carne asada.

It's pretty much standard SF Cal-Mex style food. Silly theme, but the food is fine. That SD Cal-Mex is damn tasty food. Lucha Libre also has an outlet at PetCo Park (baseball stadium). Plenty of other taco shops do carne asada fries, too.

Searsucker is good, lots of things to look at there...been a couple of times for dinner, never lunch.

If you can make a dinner Sunday my top 2 would be:

Lou and mickeys- good steak

My #1 Choice --- Taka (sushi) is outstanding, I've been 4-5 times and its always been top notch. Freshest uni, live shrimp peeled in front of you, and the best fish. IMO way better than Nobu down the road, this place is small so make a reservation now

I had some boss fish tacos @ a place called South Beach Bar and Grill on Ocean Beach. I agree w/ the people saying skip downtown, especially if you want fish tacos.

We had a nice lunch at Searsucker and a great sushi dinner, I don't recall the name.

We also went to La Jolla and dined there one night, the food was meh, but the scenery was amazing!

I went about 10 years ago and found the seafood to be kind of bland. The Mexican I did eat in the Gaslamp District was very good. I'm not sure if any of this helps being that I don't recall the names of the places being that it was so long ago. That's just what I remember. Gaslamp is a cool area.

Also, I did frequent this place a few times as it was right around the corner from my hotel. Pretty cool place. Karl Strauss
