This whole thread can just be renamed "I like to bitch about inconsequential stuff."
Restaurant A: huge menu, people here complain that there's too much on the menu and they should trim stuff and do a few things well instead of trying to please everyone.
Restaurant B: small menu of things a place does well, so people here complain that there's not enough variety and the menu needs to be expanded.
You just can't win here. People just need something to bitch about.

But it isn't a burger restaurant. They own a burger and sandwich restaurant. It is called Curbside. They've never advertised themselves as a chicken sandwich restaurant even once.
That's not what this is, in my opinion. This restaurant is run by someone who has proven himself for years. They know what they're doing as far as cooking goes.

Let me put it this way. I've brought three different folks now that politely said they didn't realize it was just a place with a couple sandwiches. I'm a Merchant fanboy, so I hadn't realized. But they're not wrong.

Full disclosure though - that is just their weekday lunch menu, and you're ignoring their daily lunch special.

I'd rather a place stick to what they do really good than try to grow the menu and start putting out bad food.
If a place can master a few dishes, then they can master other dishes as well. They are going for something more than just a bar that serves food. The place looks like a restaurant, not a bar.

I guess I just don't see the issue. If I don't want a burger, I don't go to Company Burger. I don't get mad that Company Burger only offers burgers, I just don't go there if I'm not in the mood for that type of food.
I'd much rather a place offer a limited menu of good food, than expand their menu to items that they aren't comfortable with.
I'm excited that Baton Rouge is getting a really good lineup of restaurants and I want them to continue to be successful. They won't be if they don't change it up to attract diners who want something different.
With Company Burger, I am going there to get a burger and I know that. With a place like Overpass, I am going to select from several chef-created entrees. At least, that's what I want to do.

Yeah, discussion on a message board really sucks

They offer various apps, 3 salads, a soup, 4 variations of a chicken sandwich, a burger, and a lunch special for each day of the week. Again, it's a casual sandwich/salad spot for lunch and a bar a night. What are people expecting? I'm curious as to what you think they should add to their lunch menu?

It looks like an upscale gastropub to me. And, it is only open to 21+ patrons after 5pm.

Well they can substitute 3 of those chicken sandwiches for something else, for a start.
City Pork on Jefferson, probably my favorite place in the city at the moment, is about to change up most of their menu. It makes it fun to go there as a diner because I know there will be something different each time.
However, Overpass Merchant's cheese curds are probably the best app in the city.

Out of curiosity, do you think Chimes is bad food? They have an averaged sized menu that allows you to have something besides a sandwich or a salad and their food is pretty damn good.
Merchant is a restaurant owned by someone who considers themselves an actual chef. Their employees use the word "chef" to describe him. They are 100% going for the whole high quality foodie thing. I think it is silly to act like they're just some beer bar that happens to have food because that isn't what they even want to be.
No, I wouldn't want to see it become Brewbachers or an exact clone or the rest of the casual restaurants in the city.
A fish/shrimp/seafood dish of any kind whatsoever could be a start. Something besides the daily special not being between a bun could be nice for those who don't want a sandwich. If not, the sandwich thing could be expanded to contain something besides chicken.
Nobody is acting like they need to pull out all the stops. If my memory serves, Zombie is the one who originally praised Merchant on here. No need to gang up on his legit complaint.

Two of them are redundant and could be consolidated while allowing for additions to the sandwich (similar to the burger additions), but the other two are completely different.

At the least, they could do more of their dinner items during lunch. Just getting a little more creative with the sandwiches and allowing the crack pasta and the tacos to run all day would open up a lot of options to the lunch crowd.

I've only been once, and it was years ago. I have no idea what I ordered, so I can't comment on that.

They can do this by still being a bar that serves food. It seems to be that they are attempting to operate as a gastropub, a bar that focuses on both alcohol and food but in a limited sense.

Did they stop doing the coconut shrimp tacos and the pork steamed bun? I haven't been in a couple of months, but those were both really good and different than a burger or chicken sandwich.
The chicken skins were my favorite though, they are amazing.

This is their entire dinner menu for actual "entrees"
The Burger - $10
House Blend of Chuck, Brisket + Short Rib served w Frites
Choice of: American / Cheddar / Maytag Blue +$2
Add ons: Bacon / Yard Egg / Red Onion Jam +$2
Brisket Tacos - $12.5
Jalapeno Slaw / Chipotle Crema
Coconut Shrimp Tacos - $13
Spicy Avacado Slaw / Salsa / Sour Cream
Shrimp Lo Mein - $16
Pea Shoots / Cilantro / Sunflower Seeds / Tomatoes / Basil
Hot Lonnie - $11
Tea Brined Fried Chicken / Cheddar / Applewood Bacon / Egg / Frites
The Shrimp Lo Mein is new, but just not an exciting addition for $16. Seems very steep for something your favorite Chinese joint can whip up for half the amount and double the portion.
Their dinner entrees are 2 sandwiches, 2 tacos, and 1 pasta dish. That is absurd for a place trying to attract diners.
Now I will say their snack and small plate offerings look good, but it's not enough to attract me to become a regular.

Only served at dinner if they're served anymore. The menu above is the lunch menu, plus a daily plate (red beans or whatever).

I went at the beginning of this month and they definitely still have the shrimp tacos. My buddy said they were very good as well.
