If you like strong coffee, try Emeril's Big Easy Bold - my favorite.

Do you use any type of filter or is the built-in one sufficient?

Keurig is okay if you use it for what it is. We use it for a quick cup when leaving in the afternoon or if I'm craving coffee after supper. My wife is a night nurse, so she uses it when she gets called out. It's a convenience thing ,that's it. I always make coffee in the mornings.

My wife enjoys the Green Mountain cups, they're pretty weak imo.
I have found that Gevalia, Krispy Cream and Starbucks cups are the strongest, if that's what your'e looking for.

Wife bought one. Made our own blend with CC coffee for about a month. It becomes a hassle to clean out the dispenser with each use. We buy a knock-off of the Donut Shop Medium Roast. I don't think its as good as CC, but i'm not paying $1.80 per cup for home usage. The knockoff brand comes out to about .80 per cup. I've actually grown to like it.

To answer the question, if you like bolder coffee, Black Tiger and Double Diamond are my go to.

quote:

The peculiar thing is the way people on this board vehemently defend a subpar product like keurig

Just as peculiar are those who vehemently dislike them, yet enter a thread to not answer the question of the OP.

R2R, it's not an "inferior" product. It's a good product that doesn't suit the tastes of many people.

There are millions of people who don't care about your or my definition of "good" coffee. They want a quick cup for caffeine. They load it with cream and/or sugar and go about their day not wringing their hands about how good or bad it was.

Actually, if one is putting cream and/or sugar in coffee, I am not paying much attention to the opinion because you aren't even tasting the coffee.

Anyway

As I sit here drinking the coffee I made in my french press, I can see my Keurig as well. And I like having it very much.

Despite what people say, the time and effort of the FP from start to cleanup is not comparable to the Keurig.

When I have time, or am working from home and going to have a couple of cups I will use the FP. Ironically, the second cup is not going to be hot at all, so reheating is necessary.

When I am on the go, the Keurig is perfect. I can also pop a decaf in there in the afternoon, or a flavored one (which I hate) for a guest.

We have a new one at the office that makes several sizes and includes a "strong" setting. If an 8 oz. cup set on the strong setting isn't bold enough for you, you likely won't find a cup you like outside your own home.

I am by no means a coffee snob but I drink the French market breakfast blend in the mornings and enjoy it.

I would suggest ordering a few of the variety packs off amazon and seeing what all you like.

They also make a lot of hot chocolates and hot ciders for it that my mom and MIL really enjoyed last Christmas.

a French press is cheaper than a keurrig. Those pods add up quick.

This is very true. Another reason I use the FP when I am around the house and the Keurig more judiciously.

By the time you make 8 single cups in the Keurig, you may as well have just used the french press. In an office setting where people want different types of coffee I can see the value of a Keurig, but at home it's a "luxury" (in the loosest sense of the word) that is very hard to justify.

Fortunately, our Bunn can use K-cups or pods. I prefer the pods-the wife K-cups.

Here's what I use,

I think it does a better job than K-cups and with less waste.

I think an office setting is the only place where a keurig makes sense.

Would I love to use a French Press all the time? Sure, but it's not reasonable at work.

In terms of both monetary value and quality of taste, it is indeed inferior. The only argument to be made for Keurig is convenience, but if you start having to fill your own K-cups with grounds that exposed the quick/easy benefit of the machine.

I suppose in some sense. There are lots of products in every house that fits this bill.

But for $70 I don't find it that way.

I like our Keurig. I like dark coffees (Dark Magic by green mountain, Emeril's Big, Bold, Easy, and Starbucks Sumatra)
I find that using the coffee grounds in the little filter thing defeats the purpose of the convenience of the keurig, although I have used it before without problems. My complaint would be that I wish it would have the option to brew 20 oz or more at a time... As far as the temp, make sure the temp is set as high as possible, (192 degrees I believe). Also we use distilled water in the reservoir which helps prevent the amount of scale build up over time. I often use just run water through for the kids' hot chocolate.

Everyone is gonna have their opinions... Just my $.02

You're only looking at the cost of the machine. There are several articles (not just the one from the NY Times from 2012 that I've referenced many times on here) that show how you're paying $30, $40 and even $50 per pound when using K-Cups, vs. anywhere between $8 and $20 per pound when buying already ground beans and brewing yourself in a FP or traditional coffee pot. $20+ difference per pound is a hefty fee, at least for me, for the sake of saving an extra minute or two of my day.

NY Times

quote:

Nespresso Arpeggio costs $5.70 for 10 espresso capsules, while the Folgers Black Silk blend for a K-Cup brewed-coffee machine is $10.69 for 12 pods. But that Nespresso capsule contains 5 grams of coffee, so it costs about $51 a pound. And the Folgers, with 8 grams per capsule, works out to more than $50 a pound.

That’s even more expensive than all but the priciest coffees sold by artisanal roasters, the stuff of coffee snobs.

An exclusive single-origin espresso like the Ethiopia, Gedeo Single Origin Espresso from Sightglass Coffee costs $19 for a 12-ounce bag, or about $25 a pound. La Cima beans for brewed coffee from Stumptown Coffee Roasters, a Grand Cru selection grown at Finca el Injerto, a renowned farm in Guatemala, is $28.50 for a 12-ounce bag, or $38 a pound.

Time

quote:

One fairly typical analysis, comparing Caribou brand K-Cups versus ground coffee, showed that the per-cup cost was 66¢ versus 28¢, respectively. If you make three cups a day, 365 days a year, that adds up to around $723 spent on K-Cups, versus $307 for regular coffee brewers. So you’d easily save $400 a year by going the old-fashioned route—which, again, Sylvan points out accurately, ain’t exactly hard to handle.

For an idea of how much your household specifically would save—or, on the flip side, how much you’re paying for the convenience of K-Cups—check out the coffee maker calculator one economist created a couple years back. Enter a few data points into the Excel calculator, including how many cups of coffee you brew per week, the cost of coffee machines you’re considering, how much you typically spend on coffee, and even how much of the coffee pot you usually wind up pouring down the drain, and it’ll spit out the per-cup price breakdowns. We entered several different scenarios, and K-Cups were at least twice as expensive in all cases.
