How upsetting is it to get Swai instead of catfish?

I just got a lunch plate. Looked great. Had four huge pieces of fish. Fried up extra crispy. I bit into the Mac and cheese and it was good. Made with spaghetti though. A side of peas which were sweet and potato salad. I don't know why, I like to try the sides first. Everything was good. Very old school soul food. I bite into the crunchy fish and it's just mush on the inside. I've gotten this the last few times I've had swai. It doesn't have that nice catfish like texture. If a place just says "fish" and not "cat fish" . I need to avoid it.

(I still ate it though, well not all)

I'd be very disappointed, I'm not eating Swai or Tilapia in place of catfish.

I would be leery of cat fish as well. Look for those offering catfish.

Didn’t realize places are doing this. That’s pretty shitty. And explains quality differences

Mexican/hispanic people seem to love swai. The Fiesta grocery I go to always has a bunch of it in the seafood area.

Queen's. I saw a Hold the Mayo where he put it at the top of a top 10.

You order from a window at what looks to be a junk yard. This picture is from a few years ago and that broke down RV was still there.
You order. Give them your phone number. Wait 20 minutes or so and they call you to get it.
Not my usual quick counter lunch service. Especially with Lee's around the corner making plates in 30 seconds.

I usually don't get fish at all. But a guy eating in the parking lot had a fish plate and it looked good.
Oh well.

One of my favorite to go/catering places serves swai on their menu, and it drives me crazy- they sell gulf shrimp & crawfish, buck up and get local catfish, too. I always tell people to pay attention to the menu.

It would work for stewed or smothered fish dishes. It just isn't right for fried. In my opinion.

I had read about some people complaining about getting swai on Facebook. But i guess most of the places I do get catfish from were legit.

In alabama they call that a meat and 3, is there a name for that in Louisiana or elsewhere? I had never heard of it until college at Auburn. There was Veggies to GO and a couple other places that served that type of food. I've never seen it in Florida or Tennessee.

Swai taste just fine. You'd be surprised how many people can actually tell the difference. We use to taste test people all the time and believe or not, customers liked the Swai more than the fresh.

With that said, I do believe restaurants need to be upfront and transparent on what they're serving. Lots of places try to shave cost and serve Swai while telling customers it's fresh. That's no bueno.

Several states have passed laws that restaurants have to specify if it's US catfish or not. I've been shocked at places on the not list. There is a considerable cost difference. The restaurant decides what they can charge and what they are willing to have their cost come in at. Same as the guest choosing to go next door

I've sold both for years. Believe or it not, in blind taste tests people actually prefer the swai or pangasius without even knowing it. One reason is that contrary to popular believe, swai generally has firmer meat and is much more straight when cooked. Visually its a much better presentation than catfish. Catfish is rarely straight or flat when cooked.

Like anything else there are quality differences in different brands of catfish. A lot depends on how they are raised/fed, processed, and stored after packing.

They call it this in Hawai'i too but, their plate lunch is always served with two large scoops of rice.

Sounds like plenty of plate lunches around here.

There’s absolutely no excuse for any Gulf Coast restaurant to be serving swai, other than they’re trying to maximize profit and sacrifice quality. I refuse to eat anywhere that serves swai or “fish” opposed to Louisiana or Mississippi catfish. It’s just as bad as those that serve imported crawfish or shrimp.

To be clear, I sold food to restaurants. I wasn't a restaurant owner. I sold these items among 1000s of others.
