1. Make an appointment with neurosurgeon.
2. Have most of brain removed.
3. Make appointment with banker.
4. Sign life away at bank.
Now, you're all set.

1) Have money
2) Be popular and have "great" dinner parties
3) Have everyone tell you that you should totally have your own restaurant
4) Find trendy location in a newly gentrified neighbhorhood
5) name it Table + Fork: A Farmhouse Experience
6) Decorate it like your Grandma's house with a little rustic chic thrown in
7) Create a 1 page menu
8) Put figs on everything
9) Have a few signature way too sweet cocktails
10) Profit

10) LOSE your savings and everybody else's money, Wonder why you weren't in the 1% to make it...go back to cooking. DO NOT Profit

Today...I'd start small with something like a food truck, if you can do well with that then you can try for a regular place.
I'd also make sure that you know something about business or have a partner that does.

If you don't know a lot about the business, there's a 90% chance you should forget about it.
Otherwise, have LOTS of capital to open, staff and run for a couple of years, maybe.
Don't think you or your friends necessarily know what the dining public will enjoy and patronize.

Have a "fall back" career waiting for you.

Any tips?
server: how is everything?
future OP: everything is wonderful, thanks!! *takes out phone* this place is really nothing special, and the service is awful.
first reply with automatic 6 downvotes: give it a month or so and let them work the kinks out first. trust me, i was in the service industry half my life, and i know better than anyone how this works.
actual owner with recent join date and name of restaurant as screen name: we did our best to train them. can you give me their name and i'll talk to them? email me and i'll give you coupon for next time. sorry about your experience.

I've got a tip....... Don't do it
Posted on 9/2/15 at 10:42 am to william45
Lots of people fail at it, yet others seem to have great success, year after year. It's damn hard work, much of it at the physical/blue collar/grunt level (plumbing, cleaning, hauling). If your mindset is "I'll hire people to do that", then don't get into the resto business.

Great piece of advice here.

Find a city that's carelessly missing an easy money maker (ex: LSU campus without a major sports bar, Super Dome area/CBD without a major sports bar) and profit.

Anytime a successful restauranteur does anything the F&D experts have something negative to say about the name, food, concept etc. ( see the Sammy's Bistro thread) when their only expertise is eating.
