We usually hit Houston once a year for a food trip. Whats new and what are we missing?

Also is their a nice meat/cheese and or wine shop like martins or kiefes? Spanish groceries would be a plus.

Downtown and midtown would be a plus...as would happy hours involving wine, cocktails or oysters

Been to Caracoal, hugos, anvil, blue nile, mala sichuan, himalayas, churascos, lemon tree, indika, pondicherri, taco truck by west alabama icehouse, la carafe, underbelly, reef, killens bbq, el tiempo, and dim sum in chinatown somewhere.

Regional chinese like mala, malaysian, african, thai, burmese would all be pluses too.

Finally, whats the new underbelly, oxheart, reef? As in, what are some of the hot restaurants now?

We enjoy anything from a non-descipt strip mall place with great tacos to the wine bar at the Four Seasons.

pass and provisions is the best meal I have had in a while. I cannot wait to go back. I ate at the casual side too.

Welcome food center in chinatown is pretty cool. It is a Chinese grocery store Here is the yelp to get an Idea . They have a few deli spots and Asian versions of meat and 3 plates. Great place to grab Lunch and pick up some produce.

Other Chinatown resturants:

Tiger Den: Ramen, usually a wait but there is a good sushi spot next door and Fu Fu cafe is a safe walking distance, fantastic dumblings.

Korean: Jang Geum.

Banana leaf: yelp says its Malayasian, IDK. It was awesome.

Red Lion on Shepperd. British pub food and Brit-Indian food, solid beer selection and just a homey feel.

Don't know what kind of happy hours they run but it is pretty damn good. The curry wings are $$$$$

I second The Pass. Had a great experience there a few weeks ago, and looking forward to my next meal there.

Kanomwan for Thai food that will change your life....and I can tell you that as somebody who spent quite a good deal of time over in Singapore and Thailand for work. Order the S1, the S3, and the H1z

Also, Hyunh for Vietnamese near downtown.... it's amazing. Order the pulled duck "salad" and pork noodle wraps for appetizer, then order number 70 extra spicy for your entree.

The big Spec's has a nice grocery store attached to it. Although to be honest, when I went through there, I was hauling $400+ worth of beer, so I wasnt looking to buy more.

Oh, and there's a big nice Fiesta market near Reliant Stadium. All sorts of good Mexican stuff there.

Revival Market for meat and cheese, but Central Market beats the shite out of that place. Houston Wine Merchant on Shepherd is closest to Martin's...but honestly you're better off at Spec's on Smith Street.

If you haven't been to Phoenicia Grocery Store, it's worth the trip. Stuff from all over Europe and the Near East.

Cooking Girl, Pepper Twins (owned by the same girl who helped open Cooking Girl), Les Baget(Vietnamese), Thai Gourmet is the best in town (don't order anything over medium or you will regret it). Night Market just opened is supposed to offer curry from all over Asia. La Mexicana for breakfast one morning, menudo on Sat or Sun.

Best meals I've had at new joints recently have been at Bernadine's (I-10 platter is a must here) or Hunky Dory next door, Ritual, and the Pit Room-exponentially better than Killen's (yeah I fricking said it).

They aren't the newest, but Coltivare, Oporto Fooding House, and Helen Greek Food and Wine are all fine places.

I've been going back to old standards here-too many new places that just don't match up with the likes of Roost, Mockingbird Bistro (closing at the end of December sadly), Reef, Hugo's/Caracol, Vinoteca Poscol.

Huge fan of the tacos there. They make the tortillas using the rendered fat from the briskets they smoke.

Been to the Pit Room once, about a month ago. Got the ribs. Fantastic.

Though I regretted not doing a 2 meat plate because the smoke ring on that brisket just looked like the Divine himself smoked it.

Your bar list-Pastry War, Julep, Anvil (though I'm pretty sure I've sent you here years ago), Wooster's Garden, Public Services, 8 Row Flint, Kirby Ice House, West Alabama Icehouse(mostly for tacos), La Grange, Cottonwood, Axelrad, Hay Merchant, Camerata (if you go here, stop by and say hello, I'm a couple blocks away)

Breweries-8th Wonder, Brash, Karbach (ZOMG they sold out), St. Arnold's of course, Eureka Heights

I've become a huge fan of Bernadines, it's fantastic. I also love Oporto and you can't go wrong at Coltivare either. I'm not sure if you're into Japanese, Omakase-type places but Uchi and Kata Robata are places my wife and I really enjoy when we want something different.

As for the market you're looking for, you may want to try Phoenicia, it's mostly Greek/ Mediterranean but should have some Spanish items and a neat enough place to visit regardless...

Edit: I didn't read the thread but damn Offshore Angler's got it covered once again.
