Took ya'lls advice and hit up Mala Sichuan and Durham House this weekend while in was in town for work and thought I'd share some photos.

Red chili dumplings. Maybe the best thing I ate this weekend. Great amount of kick and just a good dish overall.

I wasn't a huge fan of the Dan Dan noodles, but they weren't bad by any means.

Kung Pao Chicken was excellent. I went safe here in case I wasn't a fan of the other two items.

Boudin from Durham House. Wasn't blown away by it at all. But it wasn't bad. I did like the addition of the crustini.

Some great canadian oysters.

Also picked up the shortbread po'boys which I thought were on point.

Here's some of the octopus.

For my entree I picked the rabbit and andouille jambalaya. I enjoyed both, but I've had better jambalaya before, but it was still good.

Once again, thanks to all that helped me out with some locations to check out.

Lol I looked for it and couldn't find it on the menu! But your other suggestions were on point.

House special noodles are the best ones at Mala. The beef jerky there, stir fried green beans, and twice cooked crispy beef are favorites of mine too. The rabbit at Mala is delicious but it's a pain in the butt to eat around all of those bones.

As far as Durham house, I have no desire to eat there. The prices are sky high on dinner, and I've heard consistently the food is just ok honestly. Lots of bad Yelp reviews lately as well involving service, cooks times, and politeness which doesn't surprise me after I had met one of the owners. I actually never hear anyone talk about them either, which is never a good thing.

Next time in town hit state of grace. Possibly the hottest spot in town right now. Place stays packed. Also, BCN was a fantastic meal just the other night when I went.

And the best octopus in town might be at Costa Brava. Did some for lunch the other day with an order if boquerones, some Jamon Iberico, and their seafood salad.

What are those metal things stuck into the Asian dishes?

I suggest you reconsider. I also saw they had recently had some bad yelp reviews making me think I may have made a mistake, but I went with three friends and we had a great time. The service was a tad slow, but it was a packed house.

The food came timely and I thought it was all done pretty well.

On price, I thought it wasn't bad at all. Between my three friends and myself, we each paid between $60-70 with all of those appetizer split and each of us having 2-3 drinks. I thought it was pretty reasonable.

Every damn time I go to Houston I end up going to Kenny and Ziggy's because i have to get my Jewish Delicatessen fix somehow. All the jewish delis are closed in Austin. So I rarely end up getting to try all the great places Houston has to offer.

Dude.. The best thing at Mala is the house special spicy crispy chicken. Skip the kung pao next time. It's not even a sechuan dish.

My issue is having a great time with friends is not equal to great food. $60-70 as well for drinks and split apps is a big sticker price too. Happy hour oysters at state of grace are cheap as can be or I could hit Bramble for his and get a free 44 ranch hotdog at happy hour with a $2 lone star. I guess my main reasoning is, it's not hard to find 100 other options of great food in Houston. Why would I spend $150 for two people to go eat something that costs that much, yet you were unimpressed by 2 of the 4 dishes posted. The company I bring almost always makes dinner enjoyable in any atmosphere.
