Yelp search for Cajun/Creole eateries in Brooklyn yields like 8 different places. Definitely looks to be a modern interpretation of familiar standards - culinary school, hipster vibe influence no doubt - but most of it looks pretty good. I like the food porn pics best from these places:

Tchoup Shop - Brooklyn
Catfish - Brooklyn ($18 gumbo!!)
The Boil. - lower east side.

That's cool you moved to NYC. Takes some brass ones. Enjoy.

But okra and tomatoes is awesome.
in some settings maybe but not in my gumbo. I can do okra in my gumbo but tomatoes screw up the flavor and make it something other than gumbo IMO.

I like mine very simple. Only veggies in my gumbo are onion, celery and bell pepper.

I went to Gumbo Bros a few months back and had a cup of gumbo, roast beef poboy, and a drink for just over $20. Seemed pretty reasonable considering where it is.

Not much more than I pay in the dirty 'dell. And Slidell ain't no New Yawk.

Amen. Gumbo is best when it spartan and simple. Let the roux and the smoked meats showcase their flavor. The more you put in it, the further away from "grandpaws" gumbo. That is not to say you cant get delicious flavors.

That's not gumbo in the picture. It's stewed okra and tomatoes with shrimp in it. And it looks fantastic to me. If someone serves me that and calls it gumbo I'm going to destroy it just the same as if they called it tumbo, dumbo or stewed okra and tomatoes with shrimp in it. A named doesn't make something inedible, terrible or cause me to

right. If I went to a restaurant and ordered a cheeseburger and they served me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich I would rightly point out that i ordered a cheeseburger regardless of whether or not they served me the best PB&J on God's green earth.

That's a really cool story about cheeseburgers and PB&Js.

I had a pretty good cheese burger with peanut butter on it once. I think peanuts are underutilized in cooking.

Oh yeah that wasn't a picture of gumbo. I imagine someone could start a profitable gumbo restaurant if they took the Ramen/Pho model and translated it to gumbo. Get to choose light or dark and add proteins a la cart.
