Okay, I've wanted to go to August for a few years now. Wife and I are planning an anniversary trip to NOLA in the Spring and I've about settled on this being the fine dining experience.

Either August or Commander's Palace.

Which?

If August, what to order? What is the can't miss dish? Just do the tasting menu? If I'm going to drop a couple of hundred dollars on a meal, I don't want to make mistakes. We aren't alcohol drinkers, so it will be all food. Maybe one glass of wine, but nothing more than that.

You can get the tasting menu without the wine pairings. I think its 80 per person as opposed to 130.

"Troll" is back. It was a prefixed menu and I was in the mood for filet. I didn't order the fish because I knew I'd end up finishing my wife's plate. Neither were good. August was not good and not worth the money at all. I've had other John Besh restaurants that I liked. This was not one. Maybe if we both got something different it would make us cum. This particular time was horrible and now I have a bad taste for the place.

August is a universally praised restaurant that is considered perhaps the best in this city, state, and region. It is an impeccable, almost flawless restaurant. I think you need to either re-assess your own tastes or give it another shot.

They both have great qualities, but I would pick Commander's. The food is less "artsy" than August, but you'll have more options for every part of the menu.

But the main reason I'd pick Commander's is that for a special occasion, it just feels much more like a night to remember, so to speak. They truly want to make sure that you'll have a wonderful time.

You cannot go wrong either way, but...for really special occasions, Commander's is the place to go. It just feels like a special occasion type of restaurant more than any other in New Orleans, IMHO. Now the food is much more traditional NOLA style, as opposed to the more avant garde places like Cochon and others, but the entire experience is unlike any other. The service, the decor, the menus, etc....everything is top notch.

I would pick August because of the more intimate setting. August is a very small place that has a lot fewer tables than Commanders.

Can't go wrong with either one though.
