GMO facts

It's a fact that Americans have gotten bigger, but do you think it's as a direct result of GMOs or our lack of exercising, or perhaps a combination, or other factor?

The data is pretty hard to argue with, and truthfully, I don't need data to drive that point hone. All I really need is my eyes that have witnessed us getting bigger and bigger in that time frame. When I look back at my school yearbooks there are a few who were struggling with weight issues, but most all were not even close to as heavy as the kids are today, and we ate plenty of burgers and fries, but also didn't eat fast food every night, didn't have video games to park behind and got more exercise because there was nothing to do inside all day long, and only 4 telivision stations, so there's that argument, but still I wonder if GMOs aren't very much a contributing factor to weight gain in the US. What say you?

Was there always High Fructose Corn Syrup in everything? In my way of thinking, what is used to fatten cows up before slaughter? Corn What is high fructose corn syrup made from?

I agree, and that's a good point worthy of consideration.

The computer age might be a factor...kids and adults would rather sit in front of a computer than go play ...hell just move around some

Fiance' works in the food industry and he'll tell you that GMO is a scary term for something that is not actually that scary. Sometimes genetically modified can mean that they employed "natural selection" to eliminate bad things like diseases in the plants. It can be bad, but it isn't always bad.

Obesity is more about people parking on a couch for days at a time, taking the elevator to go up one floor and eating McDonald's several times a week. Poor choices, for the most part.

I have serious skepticism about the 1996 time frame. I started noticing obesity levels going up at least 10 years before that.

Although I have some serious concerns with GMO's and not just where it pertains to our health, I have to agree with you, and I think there are other factors as well that contribute to this, not the least of which is our extreme lack of exercise, or just walking outside even.

When was the last time either of you witnessed a sand lot game of B-ball or football? I know that parents eons ago made you get off your arse and into the outdoors if the weather was good.

If I'm not mistaken, schools are also starting to get rid of their PE programs. They're also gutting their playgrounds to the point of being completely dull and useless. People are eating more, food is becoming more calorically dense, and people hardly exercise anymore. I'm also pretty sure that soft drinks contain more sugar now than they did in the mid-90s, when I first started looking at nutrition facts (though I could be completely wrong).

In the 70's and early 80's really, there was nothing to do indoors besides watch soap operas. It sucked huge, so being punished from going outside was the worst. Growing up, there was a constant game of something going on, well into HS years, be it sandlot football, soccer, basketball, baseball, skate boarding, or we would make it up on the fly, or bike racing, tennis, building tree houses, swings, swimming, etc. The worst thing was when the lights came on and we had to go home.

Truth be known, in the summer, we weren't allowed in the house, would get sandwiches on the patio, and cool off with the hose. The only inside activity we really were involved in was Saturdays at Skate City.

Not buying it. We are getting bigger because we eat more and exercise less. that's it.

Look at a "large" drink from the 80's and look at one now. When I was very youg, an 8 oz coke bottle was what you got at the store. Then it was a 12 oz can or a 16 oz, no it is a 20 oz or a liter.

Kids just don't go outside as much anymore, and it is the parents fault also.

Parents treat their kids like they're too fragile to breathe now.

Don't forget fear of lawsuits. We were up to 20 kids from ages 7-12 play on vacant lots with no supervision back in the 50s. If that happened today and a kid got hurt there would be a lawsuit on the owner of the vacant lot.
