Gave Hi-Ho in Denham another chance today.

I went once when they first opened, which has been a long time ago now -- close to three years.
It was bad.
I got a pork sandwich, heavy. Half of the meat had no sauce on it, the meat was cold and the whole thing had very little taste. I had always heard pretty good things about the place, so I chalked it up to working the kinks out.
Fast forward to today. Three years...kinks should be out. I was really craving a good BBQ sandwich and was right there. So I tried the beef sandwich with heavy sauce. How much better than my first try? None. Cold in the middle. The bun completely saturated with a sauce no more tangy than ketchup, yet meat in the middle completely unsauced. No smoky, tangy, beefy flavor to any part of the sandwich. The bun was fresh. The chips on the side tasted more BBQ-y.
I am disappointed, as it is very close to my house, and I would love to patronize the restaurant, but I just will not waste the money again. My husband says McRib is better. I cannot attest, as I have never had McRib But neither shall I have another Hi-Ho.

Have you ever had firehouse BBQ by the dollar general in watson? (in the same strip mall as papa johns). It is better than hi ho for sure. Not the best I have ever had but better than hi ho.

Yes! I have picked up from there a few times. I actually like their brisket better than any I've had in BR. I have never been to Waynes in Livingston, which I hear is the best around.
Sonny's and Podnuh's are better than Hi-Ho, IMO. I was really dissatisfied with my lunch...obviously!

quote:There is actually a Hi-Ho directly across the street from Waynes in Livingston. It is amazing to me that it is still in business. Hi-Ho is pretty much as you described it - too much sauce on a bun. The meat is an afterthought. Go to Waynes and you will not be disappointed in the meat. I will say this though - other than his baked beans he does need to work on his side dishes a bit.
Waynes in Livingston

I disagree. Same as the others to me. Terrible food.

Hi-Ho built a brand new building to open up one of those shitty restaurants in Metairie on Airline Hwy. It lasted less than 6 months.
I had never seen more than 2 cars in the parking lot, but it was usually empty.

LP food is generally pretty terrible, but Wayne's and Firehouse are both legit.

Glad to see it's not just me.
I suppose I will just have to try Wayne's! I have been making do with a pound of brisket from Firehouse or a smoked chicken from Oak Point with my own beans and slaw, but I have heard too many good things about Wayne's now.
One interesting thing at Firehouse is their potato salad -- it is almost like a baked potato. Instead of eggs, pickles, mayo, etc., it had a tang of sour cream with green onions, bacon and cheese. I was taken aback at first, but then really enjoyed it. Definitely lighter than a completely mayo-based salad.
I just don't understand why there are always people at the Denham Hi-Ho. They have expanded their menu into chicken, ribs, salads and, most notably, beer. Maybe that's what keeps people coming in. It's not the sandwiches.

Wayne's is good too but not so much better than firehouse to justify the drive. I am going to make a pointto try this potato " salad " though next time. Sounds good. The lack of BBQ around here causes me to get hubs to smoke pork shoulder often.

Firehouse is good, and the potato style salad is different, and I like it.
I love a good brisket, so I usually just smoke my own
Which is what I'm doing this very minute!!
