Food Nostalgia: Dog and Suds

Went to Dog n Suds for lunch today, and had a flash back to of fashioned drive-ins of from 50 years ago. Dog n Suds, unlike Sonic, which has evolved over time, still has the same look and feel of a drive in from the 50's.
I ordered the Charco cheeseburger and their "World Famous" root beer. The sandwich was very good (I'm not sure if I was biased, or not) and the root beer was excellent, even if it did taste a bit like they combined 2/3's root beer with 1/3 cream soda.
If you have a chance to stop by Dog n Suds, you should do it. There are only 20 stores remaining, from a high of 650, at one point. They are closed during the coldest periods and today was their opening day in Indiana.

We always stopped there on Sunday Nights as we drove from Jackson to Starkville. I bet I ate there 50 times. Always good Burger stuff. Located very near the Highway 16 and 35 intersection.

I didn't know how big they once were. 650 locations covers a lot of territory (38 states). They are down to less than 20 locations in 7 states, but the two here in Lafayette, IN do very good business.
I have eaten there maybe 3 times. I'm guessing that very little has changed in all those years. The burger was a delicious old school burger. Triple X here in West Lafayette gets all the publicity for burgers and homemade root beer, due to being on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, but give me Dog-n-Suds any day.

The old-school A&W by NLU served one of the best burgers i'd ever had as a kid. sad what A&W has now become.
same for long john silvers. i remember a line out the door on 18th street on sundays and i would sit there and salivate while waiting for that crunchy fish resting on a massive pile of batter debris
who the hell ran these places into the ground? don't say people's tastes have changed; these places serve shite food now; thats why nobody goes there.

Thanks for reminding me. I used to go to the A&W in Port Townsend, WA when I was in Junior High. It was a drive-in, but I wasn't sure if all A&W's were drive-ins, because PT is kind of remote and I didn't know of any others.
But the concept was the same - burgers, coney dogs, and root beer. A&W is now just another generic chain and not very good. When they modernized it, it lost it's charm and the food lost it's flavor.
I think that the burger restaurants like 5 Guys, Burger Fi, Steak Shack, etc, are successful because they are serving food that reminds us of the old time drive-in burgers.

Used to follow it up with an Italian ice.
Good times.
