My birthday is coming up and I want a charcoal grill. What should I get for my first grill? Also, any charcoal grilling tips for a newb are appreciated.

Those are sweet, but I forgot to mention that I have a budget of $200 or so.

Yup, the weber 22" kettle is going to be perfect and leaves a lot of room to expand your styles and methods of cooking. Get comfortable with 2 zone cooking and then move into whichever direction you want after that.

$200. Weber Kettle.

You can trick it up, if you want, but there are about a bazillion videos online to tell you how to cook low and slow, hot and fast, reverse sear, etc. I would learn as much as you can about how to use it and have fun.

You can do anything on a kettle, and the only complaint I have is that you have to babysit them a bit on the long, cooks. I wouldn't leave it alone for more than 1/2 hour without checking up on it.

Look for a used Portable Kitchen Grill (PK) online

They are made in Little Rock, they're are cast aluminum and are very versatile.

The people who have and use them love them.

I have had a hasty Bake Legacy for about 5 years. Its similar to a cajun grill. Its the best Charcoal grill I have ever owned. Its similiar in price to a green egg. Love the movable fire grate and huge side door. Company has been around since the 1950's so easy to get replacement parts. Its a great smoker as well.

Thanks for the Weber Kettle recs. I'll go with that and start with the 2-zone cooking method. I've got a lot of experience on the stovetop but have always had an itch for a grill. Can't wait to get started.

This is a great grill to learn on. It is versatile, and helps you to learn about temp control, different zones and techniques for cooking. Once you master the kettle, the knowledge is pretty easily transferred to other grills.

Get a good thermometer with a grate temperature probe.

Yeah, I use a Maverick dual probe wireless thermometer. Reasonably priced and can go with you to your next rig.

IF you can up your budget a little get a PK Grill, it will be the last charcoal grill you ever buy, and you'll be able to give it to your kid's kids. You can get one for about $369 on sale here LINK

Count me in the Weber votes. But I'd add the extra $100 and buy the 26" version and a Vortex.

Weber is hard to beat at that price point. They are durable, versatile, and have plenty of accessories to customize with. Home Depot has the 22" Weber Kettle Premium listed for $165. They will assemble it for free and you can just pick it up. Add this chimney for $20 and you should be out the door for right around $200. Get a nice thermometer ($50-70) with at least two probes (one for food temp, one for grill temp) once you get the cash because built in thermometers suck. If you plan on grilling for large crowds, the 26" model could be handy. Keep us posted on your new hobby.
