Yeah, I've had homebrews from 2 different fellow FBDers that have put local brewers to shame. LST's Citra pale was great, and B's last one he sent me that really could've passed for a DIPA was better than any beer local brewers have put out. I'm sure many of you BR locals that have had S14's grapefruit IPA and other beers B has brewed, which kick the shite out of Hopitoulas, etc. Why is that? I'm not a home brewer, so maybe there's a reason I just don't understand.

I heard that Andrew at Parish claims that Ghost in the Machine is better than Heady. Is that true? That he claimed that? Or is it?

Have seen him drink Heady, commend it, then remark that their DIPA is just as good. First hand account.
ETA: will add though that this was at least a year ago, not sure if it was the same recipe that will be used for GitM

Oh I believe you. Someone else I know heard him claim that. I'm just skeptical. I really really hope I'm wrong.

Two FBDers were standing next to me when it happened. Also claimed that South Coast was the best Amber ever brewed, but that's something that has been discussed many times on here.

I mean, South Coast is really good for the style. I just dont go out of my way to drink ambers.

As for being on par with Heady, damn. We can only hope.

Well, I have changed my opinion on those statements recently. The guy is really proud of his beers and I actually commend him for that.

No sense brewing on that level unless you really believe you can compete.

Having not tried them side by side it's impossible to really tell, and to be honest it will always be impossible to truly know. Why could it not be better, hypothetically? I mean heady is brewed by a guy probably very similar to Andrew, just in a different state and has some national acclaim. But before talking about heady I hadn't heard of the brewery before. So it's not so far out there for gim to be that good. Not saying it will or won't be. The test batch was extremely good though.

Ain't nothing wrong with being a homer. SC does have the best label of any amber.

I was at the brewery on Thursday. Andrew still won't let me try Ghost in the Machine. But someone had brought a Heady the night before and he was talking to me about it. His statement to me:
"Heady is great beer for it's style. Really good. But I think Ghost in the Machine can be right up there with it."

That should be his response.

You've got me. I'll make that comment. I don't understand why it is so hard for a local brewery around here to produce an exceptionally good IPA/DIPA. Is it a big secret? The information has got to be out there. Like you said, just take a proven winner, put a few personal touches on it and see how it goes. I know the water is different, but the adjustments can't be that tricky, right? I must be over-simplifying it. And do breweries ever set up tasting panels to try and gauge if the beer will be a winner? I've had better hoppy beers from Louisiana homebrewers.

I don't get it either. Why can't they make a great IPA? Lazy Magnolia figured it out. Saint Arnold figured it out. How come nobody around here can?

One theory I have is that they can't secure contracts on enough flavor/aroma hops they'd like to use to be able to make a great IPA. But that still seems like an excuse.

Yea, we know a great IPA can be made using centennial, cascade, etc.

Sometimes I wonder how well-traveled the palates are of the people making the executive decisions in these breweries.
