Pros and cons of each variety? Any specific model you swear by? Any notable cooking differences besides the type of fuel?

TIA

I have a master built propane. It cooks great bbq if I do my part. The metal on the bottom is thin and is prone to rusting through. I am on my 3rd one and will buy another when this one fails.

What does your part typically entail when cooking butts, brisket and ribs? How often do you need to add wood? Temperature stays steady easily?

I babysit mine throughout the cook. I typically add wood 1x during a butt smoke and I don't add during a rib cook. A brisket takes a long time and I may add twice. I ditched the chip pan and use a cast iron skillet so the wood doesn't catch fire. The temp is easily regulated and it's pretty easy on a tank of propane. I have the extra wide model and you can get it at bass pro I believe.

I have the Masterbuilt GS40 propane smoker. This thing is a beast.

Electric is tough to get a consistent read on.

I have the bradley electric smoker. The only thing I make are Ribs. I pretty much set it up and forget about it. About hour 2-3 I add a little water but I've forgotten and they turned out fine.

Cons the wood discs are expensive as is the whole unit. When this thing breaks I'll probably go to a offset smoker. But so far anything that has broken on it was a easy fix.

With electrics, you have two really good options.

First, go with a masterbuilt and basically forget the chips. Search for anmps on google and get a 5x8 pellet tray. Perfect smoke for 11 hours with pellets and no watching it. The 40" generation with the controls on the back of top is the best for doing this. This is the cheap way.

Expensive way is to get a very good quality electric like a Smokin It, Smokin Tex, or the best which is Cookshack. This is the pricey way. I currently have a Smokin It 3, very happy with it. Does great and requires very little effort. I use a device called a heatermeter which was originally made for keg style/smokey mountain smokers to control it from my phone and give me alarms. Keeps a pretty graph of temps.

Now that I have done smoking on the masterbuilt and a Smokin it, I wouldn't go either route again. I would buy a good pellet smoker. Just as easy as electric, but produces some of the best smokes I have had besides people who are very good with stick burners. Prefer it over kegs.

Never had interest in propane.

Trying to decide on gas or electric and ran across this old thread. Question can you use an extension card on an electric or does it lose amps/voltage and affect the operating of the smoker? TIA

I have started to use an extension cord on my electric and haven't noticed a difference.

I have had 2 electric grills. They suck first broke had to replace parts three times. Years latter got a master built it broke with in 45 minutes. Never will buy electric again. My brother had a Bradley had to buy new parts within 2years.

Propane is portable. Electric not so much.
