Youll always have a few. If half of them are dead then you should complain obviously

Anything over a dozen or so pisses me off.

They weren't handled correctly somewhere along the line IMO .

Saw this a few days ago:

quote:

Suppliers and retailers said Thursday that many of the crawfish they are receiving still have very soft shells from that molt, making them more likely to die before reaching crawfish pots.
quote:

Crawfish with thin shells typically last up to two days out of the pond, compared to the typical five day lifespan of those with harder shells.

A 5 pound order with 2 potatoes yesterday in Laffy was $38.99. You do the math...

Most of the crawfish that have their tails sticking out weren't dead. A lot of times its just too crowded and they can't tuck their tails before they die.

Eta: you are probably talking about live though.

Earlier on in the season (jan-March), 1-2 lbs of deads in each sack is common. Usually earlier on, it's all pond crawfish and their shells are soft which can cause them to die pretty quick. Even 2-3 lbs in a sack is acceptable imo in jan/feb.

Later on as their shells harden and the weather warms up, dead crawfish should become less of an issue. When the wild spillway crawfish kick in you should definitely have less than 1.5-2lbs a sack and really less than a pound is acceptable.

The best way to pick out dead crawfish is on a table and going through the whole sack to make sure you get all the dead ones out. When you wash them, most of the deads will float to the top but not always.

This time of year it better be at least 5 lbs to call and complain or ask for refund.

I had a lady bring me 2 lbs dead in a ziplock(off 3 sacks) asking for her money back. I have her $5 and told her to never come back.

Brought back 2lbs dead out of 3 sacks. I hate dealing with people like that.

When I had my retail shop I would get a few calls a week about dead crawfish. I had some claiming over half the sack was dead when I was getting 1-2lbs a sack or less out of the same sacks/batch. I would tell them to bring back the dead ones and I will weight them up and give them a refund. I never heard back from these people.

Then some people would complain like your customer early in the season.

This. Some loss is simply part of it. I have only complained one time about dead bugs and it was more like 30% loss.
