True...but I had to bend the rules to get a Houston beer on the list.

8th Wonder and another brewery are about to can in 2016. Once Copperhead in Conroe starts bottling their Striker IPA, that will be my new answer.

Since a good portion of the responses have been IPAs, this seems like as good of a thread as any to ask, which IPAS would y'all recommend trying as an "intro" to hops and IPAs in general? Not sure if it's because I don't like them or if it's just that I mainly just drink other styles, but out of the 3-4 IPAs I've tried over the years I've never fallen in love with any of them. Could just be that they aren't for me, but I'd like to at least give them an honest shot. Especially since it seems like most breweries have a variation of this style as their "signature" beer, I feel sometimes I'm missing out on some good ones solely because I tried a few duds. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks and sorry for the massive paragraph.

Most important thing about IPAs is to check the date. Really good IPAs turn bad with a little age.

Envie is labeled as a pale ale but might as well be an IPA that tastes really good and isn't too harsh. I'd try that one if I were you

Try a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. It's a good gateway beer to hops. It took me a few tries before I found an IPA that clicked with me....Full Sail IPA. It's more of an English style IPA which means less hoppy with a malt backbone.

Agreed. Lagunitas Sucks is one of the best IPA values out there.

Agree with coater, envie would be a great intro to hops. It's not overly butter and the citrus notes it throws out is fantastic.

Sweetwater 420 pale ale would be a milder hop prime
Sierra Nevada Hop Hunter

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Sam Adams noble pils was my into to hops

I dunno. I have been buying this for years. It's widely available. Would be more popular if it wasn't so expensive.

Don't see how these are under the radar.

I like it quite a bit, but we've had some shipped to our area that is way too old. Otherewise, it's awesome.

For the person wanting an approachable IPA, that's hard. I will say that I think some of the more citrus IPAs aren't quite so bitter tasting, which is what turns off a lot of people. My current favorite widely available one is New Belgiums Citradelic (and I'm not really a big NB drinker any longer).

I guess I was thinking more "widely available but overlooked".

was coming here to add this...

I think North Coast makes quite a few beers that fly under the radar for how well made they are.

Red Seal*, Old Stock Ale, Old Stock Cellar Reserve are all very good, regularly available, and dont get much attention.

*Red Seal can get pretty nasty if it's been sitting around a while. Not sure if these guys date bottles or not.
