I finally got my beer trade in the mail yesterday.

And was able to chill and crack open a Heady Topper. Seeing as I drank a ghost the day before here is my comparison of the 2.

APPEARANCE: Both beers are nearly identical with the pour. I'd say ghost might be slightly darker than heady, but hardly noticeable.
AROMA: Ghost wins on Aroma
TASTE: Both beers have nearly identical flavors up front of dank, citrusy fruit. The difference, IMO, is the finish. I find Heady to finish more piny, and ghost to finish more citrusy.
OVERALL: I give Ghost the win in a heads up. Both are world class, but ghost wins, IMO, with more pronounced flavor and a more consistent finish in the back end.

ETA: this was my first time trying Heady Topper.

How fresh was the Heady? Anything over a week helps Ghost greatly.

Oh, probably about 3 weeks to a month old. Couldn't find a born on date. This was going off of what my trade partner told me.

This makes no sense to me. If a beer in a can has to be less than a week old to be at its best, what is the point?

I've just heard when you get Heady in Vermont it's a different experience, never had it before and not saying Ghost isn't world class. It's just nice having it in our backyard.

It has nothing to do with the can. Hop flavor and aroma will naturally fade with time regardless of container.

However the difference in one week vs. three is hardly "great".

I need to try both since I am in neither back yard.

I'm assuming Heady is available in GA, but I don't know about Ghost.

Heady is Vermont only i think. And Ghost is Louisiana only.

Well the heady turnover is insanely quick. So if the guy bought it on Thursday, shipped it Friday, and it's here today, I'd bet that it is no older than 2-3 weeks.

While that extra 15 days in a sealed can may have taken away ever so slightly, I imagine it was a pretty fair fight and OP just prefers Ghost.

Well that solves that. I will try some Ghost when I come to BR this fall.

I'm just playing devils advocate, got to keep the ghost hype in check. Seriously, props to the OP on the beer!

Heady Topper is unfiltered, unpasteurized, and should be kept cool/cold at all times. I believe that Alchemist delivers their own beer to retailers in their own trucks that are climate-controlled. They know how the beer is best consumed, and go to great lengths to meet these standards.

Also, you are talking about a major difference in business philosophy between Alchemist and Parish. Parish releases Ghost every couple of months. Alchemist releases Heady on a weekly basis. Alchemist wants you to consume their product as quickly as possible because, hey, there will be a new batch next week.

You haven't seen the Ghost meltdowns around this place the past few days? You won't be trying Ghost when you come to BR either unless you're coming when a batch is released and you get it on tap somewhere -- or unless someone is holding onto a bottle for you.

I want to be a dick and tell you to drink Heady from the can and not from a glass, but you were able to secure some Heady so congrats.

I agree with LL. you'll have to either get lucky and just happen to get here the same week it's released or time your trip around a release date if you want to try it this fall.

If you've never tried it I can send you some of this batch if you want.

Are you telling me there's not one condo available in all of Del Boca Vista?

So are you telling me there's not one house to rent in all of Tuscany?

Why? Pouring releases the aroma and allows the beer to breathe.
