Making this tomorrow for the first time to climb that mountain. Recipes I've found are split on beans. I realize it boils down to personal taste, but wanted to consult F&D expertise from those who have made it for their opinion.

Personal preference. Skyline serves it both ways btw. If you do beans they should be no more than maybe 30% of your Cincy chili. It's a really interesting flavor and works surprisingly well. Total gut bomb though.

Chili does not have beans.

Btw, do not look up "beans in the chili" on Urban Dictionary...

Texas style, I completely agree.

Asking for the Queen City version.

I put them in my chili because I like them. My wife makes chili a good bit and she does not put beans in hers.

I'm sure I'm not the only one to look it up.

I'm making a big batch. I think I'll split it to freeze and add beans to the half that I'll use down the road for chili dogs.

I don't know much about it, but it looks like canned kidney beans are among the traditional optional toppings (along with shredded cheddar cheese and diced onions).

The last link says:

Cincinnati chili lovers order their chili by number. Two, Three, Four, or Five Way. Let your guests create their own final product.

Cincinniti ChiliTwo-Way Chili: Chili served on spaghetti.

Three-Way Chili: Additionally topped with shredded Cheddar cheese.

Four-Way Chili: Additionally topped with chopped onions.

The beans aren't in the chili.

Always go with the five way. Add hot sauce. Oyster crackers on the side.

For coneys, just the chili with mustard, onions, and cheese. And oyster crackers on the side.

Large five way with hot sauce and crackers is awesome but will put you down for a few hours.
