Had my cast iron pot sitting on my counter for a few weeks. Was getting some things to take to the deer camp for the weekend when I went to go put the pot into the truck, I looked down and realized my shirt was completely black. Put the pot down and went to wipe the pot with a paper towel and there's a black dust coming off the outside of the pot. A lot of it.

Is this normal?

Was it used for cooking outdoors over wood fire?

Or if you used a burner that's airflow is all jacked up. A yellow flame will leave a lot of carbon on a pot.

It was a new pot. Used the cradle burner that the pot came with.

You're flame is probably yellow. Work with the airflow vent on the burner and get you're flame blue, not yellow. Blue burns clean.

Need more blue in your flame baw. Just like a cutting torch.

What the above said is true, but just wanted to add that the black residue is not damaging to your pot (well, not immediately anyway). I would suggest cleaning it regularly though. Over time, it will build up and can hold moisture which CAN harm your pot.
