I tried one called Shake by Boulder Beer Company over the weekend that I really enjoyed and I'm looking to try out another.

That's probably my favorite chocolate porter.

I don't know what all you get in Savannah, but keep an eye out for Terrapin - Dos Cocoas, Terrapin - Liquid Bliss, Rogue - Chocolate Stout, Southern Tier - Choklat. I'm sure you'll be about to find some of those.

While not exactly the same as Shake, I like Fort Collins Chocolate Stout and Young's Double Chocolate Stout.

Also look for Crooked Letter Mystery Romp, it's out of Mississippi, it's a chocolate coffee porter, so not exactly the same, but similar.

Some people are recommending stouts. Those are a little different than porters.

Rogue makes a Mocha Porter that is pretty good.

I was suprised at how much I enjoyed it. Was kinda on the fence and when I brought it to the counter at Whole Foods I noticed one beer was missing. I told the cashier to just ring me up and I would go grab another beer. She looks at the bar code which was crossed out and tells me not to worry it is free.

Are they really? Take a look this article interviewing Great Lakes, Founders and Cigar City. Apparently the difference isn't really that great.

I've always considered a porter to be a lite stout due to a typically lower ABV.

I'd recommend Southern Tier Choklat, Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, Ft. Collins Chocolate Stout, or if you can find it Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout which will be somewhat lower ABV and more similar to a porter.

That's the best beer I've had from Boulder.

Rogue gets a lot of hate here, but their Chocolate Stout and Double Chocolate Stout are very good. Southern Tier makes a good one in Choklat. Terrapin Liquid Bliss is good, but I like their MooHoo Chocolate Stout even better.

In general, stouts have more bitter roastiness than porters. I've found that most of the chocolate stouts seem to mask that and they end up drinking more like porters. Your mileage may vary.

Maybe the porters that many breweries make today are VERY similar, but the technical description is different. American brewing has taken many liberties with the traditional styles (and beer in general).

This is fantastic stuff.

You can get it at Habersham Beverage on Abercorn. If they don't have it, their beer guy can point you in the right direction.

They sometimes have it on draft at Crystal Beer Parlor too.

meh. The first couple times I had their Chocolate Stout, it was amazing.. but I bought it 4-5 more times after that and it was disgusting. honestly I stopped buying Rogue altogether because I was so disappointed with the quality slipping.
