Hate Away

Until recently, the Baton Rouge restaurant scene was best characterized by conservatism.

Things are different now. While the Capital City remains understandably more restrained than tourist-driven New Orleans, the food culture here is shifting on several fronts. In the last year, dozens of new eateries have opened or been announced, and many are local concepts. Some propel Baton Rouge into new gastronomic territory. A decade ago, they might have failed, but today they have a better chance of succeeding, says Ruffino’s chef and co-owner Peter Sclafani, president of the Baton Rouge chapter of the Louisiana Restaurant Association.

It is getting better, anyone who thinks otherwise is not paying attention. Obviously not as good as NOLA, but honestly who many cities are?

It doesn't pretend to be at least from my perspective. I live an hour away from NO and eat there lunch and dinner quite a bit but I also know I have good choices here and getting better all the time.

I agree, was just saying that figuring that will be the hater's you anticipated coming into the threads first responses.

In the last six months, a flurry of new independent eateries have opened in Baton Rouge, including the Velvet Cactus, City Pork II, Barcadia, Crispy Catch, Pat’s Fisherman’s Wharf, Modern Meals, a second Bistro Byronz and, downtown, a second Fresh Salads and Wraps, Jolie Pearl, Spotters and Matherne’s Supermarket, which has become a prime spot for take-away lunches.

It's getting better, but the above is depressing.

I know nothing about the restaurant business, except how to order a meal, and I know some of the pros on here disagree with me, but I think a place like Patois would print money in BR.

Yep. The article does have a link for "Chains started in BR." so that will give them more ammo.

The dearth of that sort of place in BR is somewhat puzzling.

I think the fact that Baton Rouge will be getting more stops from Viking River cruises will only help.

The food at Velvet Cactus sucks, but it seems like it would be a fun place to go and drink way too many margaritas.
Haven't been to City Pork II yet, but I'm a big fan of the original.
I like Barcadia. Excellent burgers and wings.
Crispy Catch is meh. There are too many other places like it that are cheaper.
Heard nothing good about Pat's
Haven't been to Modern Meals, but the food there looks good.
Bistro Byronz is doing gangbusters with that second location. Place is quite good.
I used to be a big fan of Fresh Salads and Wraps when I worked downtown.
Haven't been to Jolie Pearl yet, but it looks nice.
Haven't been to Spotters yet, but something like that was needed for downtown.
Matherene's has excellent plate lunches.

The list isn't that depressing.

Where is it at?

What's the concept for this place?

It's kind-of a strange concept. Fresh, healthy food to go in reheatable containers with directions. Nothing is served hot. I guess it's designed as a place to pick up lunches for work for the week or something. The food looks good.

Second Bistro Byronz is on Perkins Road, past Bluebonnet, in that Willow Grove development. I mean, if we lived in Willow Grove, we would probably go there 2-3 times a week, at least for drinks and apps.

Spotters makes fresh wraps, sandwiches, smoothies, salads, etc. They're right next to the Downtown YMCA. OK, they're similar to Fresh, on second thought. But I think people like those kinds of places.

One of my co-workers gets stuff from Modern Meals all the times. She's got a small child and she probably works 50 hours a week.

So she just picks up a bunch of meals to heat up later in the week?

Why does everything in BR have to be compared to New Orleans ?

I don't get the huge love for Byronz. I mean, it's OK, but I've never been blown away.
