Headed to Birmingham next weekend. I've never been. Looking for a good casual place that can accommodate are large group (15-20) and ok for kids. Thanks!

What part of Birmingham will you be in? Downtown or more out towards Hoover? Is there an occasion or wanting to watch the games or just needing a dinner or lunch spot?

Paramount could be fun if you're going near downtown

Yeah that would be a good spot. I'm not sure how they have tables set up now, so trying to get everyone together might be hard, but the arcade room in the back with the sports bar feel up front would be great.

Paramount would be a great spot, but with a party that size it may be difficult. Though, if the kids are going to be in the arcade section most of the time anyways, it may be able to work.

Back 40 Brewery may be a good bet. Will easily be able to fit everyone and they have really solid food. Love their burger.

Avondale Brewing could be another option with their outdoor event space. Plenty of room for the kids to run around, small picnic tables in the back with football on a huge screen behind the concert stage. Indoor area is decent size too. There are a couple restaurants like Saw's and Post office pies (post office pies would be another option in and of itself) that you can get food to go and bring it over to avondale, so gives some more options for people to get what they want.

Davenport's Pizza has a few areas that can fit that many, and has some arcade games for the kids as well.

Saw's Juke Joint location may be able to. I think they have a side room with a really big table.

15-20 is a tough size. Really not a ton of places that can easily accommodate that. I'll do some more thinking though.

We're staying in Homewood. Just need somewhere for Friday evening and Saturday for lunch. Thanks for all the info! I'll start looking at some of these spots.

Why such a big group? I hate going to dinner with more than 6 or 7 including kids.

Near Homewood, the best place to turn the kids loose will be Martin's BBQ in Cahaba Heights (outside gravel area) and Davenport's Pizza in Mountain Brook (game room).

Everything is good at Martin's and beer selection is great. Be sure if you go to Davenport's to get the pizza EXTRA CRISPY! Otherwise you get a soggy thin crust that only the locals seem to love. Beer selection isn't great.
Friday night might be a long wait at Davenport's unless you get there early.

Troup's Pizza would be another one in Cahaba Heights. Two children's stores right beside it (toys and clothes) and a cookie place on the other side of it. Pizza is excellent and beer choices are great.

Downtown: Back Forty Brewery has a ton of outdoor space. Beer isn't that good, but the burgers are. Paramount might get a little crowded, but they have a large game room. Seating for that many might be a challenge.

Went to Soho Social in Homewood a few weeks ago with my cousin, his young kids, and some other family. They have corn hole, connect 4, and some other misc. games outside for kids

They don’t take reservations (95% sure) but we showed up with 10 or so and got a big table inside for Sunday dinner. Good food and atmosphere. Also, had some good beers on tap. Hope this helps

ETA: here’s the website Soho Social

Troup's is a solid choice. A bit roomy, and is not necessarily the easiest place to get to, so might not be that crowded on Friday evening. I've only done pick-up there, so not sure. And they could put more tables outside. Would go to Back Forty on Saturday, though.

"Martins"
This is the best recommendation for your group.

Back Forty's beer is fine. Don't just downplay it because it isn't your favorite and have the guy thinking he'd be going somewhere with just shite beer

I enjoyed their hefeweizen and red ale they have on tap currently. They've had hit or miss beers, as every brewery has, but to say there beer isn't that good isn't fair. Outside of Trim Tab and Hi-Wire, i'm not putting any of the other breweries clearly over them. Arguments can be made for others, but it isn't a clear cut difference, just depends on their offerings at the time. It is at worst average for a local brewery.

It won't be packed on Friday night, but there will be a good crowd. They roll the streets up in Cahaba Heights at 9PM. I'll be there tonight for the live music.

I’m always down for a good dust up.

I’m just going to reserve calling someone beer not very good for when it is actually bad. Avondale when they first opened and refused to air seal their tanks when fermenting was not very good beer. I’ve had some
Very good beer at back forty and I’ve had some below average ones. Overall their beer is average with an occasional release that is solid.

The Hi-wire guy is here at Troup’s tonight. Brown ale drafts for cheap and got some swag. Nice guy.

You let me know when Back Forty makes an A-OK, Avondale Brewery type turn around. I think they have the best beer venue in Bham, but if I’m ranking their beers, they are at or near the bottom compared to the others in town.

I use the My Cousin Vinny line all the time: “I’m not gonna lie to you, I could use a good arse kicking!”

Kids, big group, assuming alcohol, I’d got Back Forty for lunch and Pizza GM or SoHo Social for dinner. Mexico Linda is cheap Mexican. Johnnys is an incredible meat and three but would definitely have to split up, and no alcohol.

We had a big group come visit our store from BR recently that were here for a cheer competition. Said they enjoyed being able to walk around without their head on a swivel.
