I've got a 2.5 gal pot that's been sitting in the shed for years and I'm sure it has probably picked up some bad flavors. What's the best way to go about re-seasoning?

Make a big fire. Clean off big chunks of debris and rust with a stiff brush. Throw pot in big fire. Let fire burn off debris for a couple hours.

Once pot is cool, follow traditional seasoning methods in the oven.

I throw it on my grill at like 700 degrees for like 20 min, scrub with wire brush

Then cook some bacon or something in it. Let grease cool and wipe it down, good to go

Last time my oven needed cleaning, I put my cast iron pots in, no chemical spray, while the oven did it’s self cleaning mode. When complete and cooled, Took pots out and followed a traditional seasoning method. Word of caution, wait for a day when you can open plenty of windows as it will get smoky'

yeah, I;m trying to avoid the oven method. an outside method is preferable.

can i scrub then just fry a batch of cracklins?

I have reseasoned some pots by cooking a batch of cracklins - works great.

I clean it very well with warm soapy water. Scrubbing with a lot of elbow grease so to take everything off the pot. Allow to completely dry. Coat with thin layer of canola and bake at 400 or so for an hour. Turn off oven and allow to cool. Repeat the coat-bake-cool step for a couple times as needed

Then cook something, and clean/store as you normally would

If any rust, fill it with vinegar, soak it for 24 hours, then wipe it down with a scotch brite pad. Clean it with some fresh water. After that you can season it.

ETA, to season it just fry some craclins, preferably back fat as it takes longer and is more fatty

If you don't use cast iron regularly, the oil can go rank from sitting. Mineral oil is better if it's going to sit up for awhile.
