Heading to Austin in a few weeks for a concert. We're only gonna be in town for less than 24 hours so we're trying to be really efficient with our time. Plus we've been to Austin many times. The show is near South Congress, and we're staying on South Congress. I'm sure we'll get some drinks at the bar at Hotel San Jose. But does anyone have some casual food recs in that area beyond the average Guero's type places?

Home Slice - pizza
Vespaio - more upscale italian
Enoteca Vespaio - right next door, more casual italian
Hopdoddy - Burger Bar, one of the best burgers I've ever had. Love this place and has good tap selection. Get your burger medium rare.

That's about it for that area if you don't want to drive and want casual. Curra's (interior mexican) is not far away but I wouldn't walk it. South 1st also has a ton of good places, and not far away.

just got back from Austin yesterday and the Hopdoddy on S. Congress was abysmal. had to send back a burger that was supposed to be mid rare that was essentially a hockey puck and then the replacement was cooked the same way.

I've always felt Hopdoddy was a little over rated. It's a good burger sure and they have a lot of interesting choices, but it's not something I'd wait in line for.

Yeah that was kind of the point. I'm asking for something better than that.

In fact, I specifically asked

Was there about a month ago. Had Torchys, Hopdoddy, and Stiles Switch. None of them impressed me all that much.

Hopdoddy has gone down hill, fast. many people have told me the quality has gone down bigly. When I'm back home next, I'll go test it out.

I eat at Hopdoddy once every couple months (not at S congress) and have never had issues with quality. I went to south congress a few months ago and noticed no difference either.

I wouldn't wait in a super long line for it either, same as Franklin. But it's still the best IMO.

And if you tell the guy working the door you want to sit at the bar then you often get in quicker as many people want a table.

Always liked finding down-home taqueria's over on Caesar Chavez. Been several years but there use to be bunches with different specialties. Are there still many of these around?

Can second home slice.

Hopdoddy is good but nothing crazy. I'd compare it to Grub, Shake Shack, etc. it's very good but not worth waiting for. When I went in Feb, the line was wrapped around the building. I was scratching my head

The brick and mortars are gone, but the Las Trancas trailer is pretty good.
