Love Blacks in Lockhart and Muellers in Taylor is also a good choice.

IMO La Barbecue Brisket >>>>>>>>>>> Franklin's Brisket
Salt Lick is good, but not great BBQ. Their pecan pie was the best I've ever had
I didn't care for Kreuz, but still an order of magnitude better than any BBQ I've had in Louisiana.
Cooper's in Llano is pretty good IMO. I've been told it's not what it used to be though. (this is probably blasphemy, but I've had both Cooper's and Franklin's in the past 6 months and thought Cooper's was better)
Black's, Snow's, and Louie Mueller are the next 3 on my list when I'm out that way. I'll add Valentina's to this list.
Rudy's is great for what it is IMO. Quick, consistent, and fairly priced.

Rudy's is as good as anything in SE LA. In fact, I ate Rudy's extra moist brisket right after eating brisket at Stiles Switch and it was better. Haven't gotten to Franklin's but waiting more than an hour for any food is not something I'll do.

when I wanted something quick and the alternative was McDonald's.
I usually hit up Slab BBQ for lunch if I want something quick. It's near 183 & Burnet close to my office.

Blacks is awesome and so is Luling City Market in Luling Tx.
I've tried Kreuz and have been disappointed both times. I still need to try Smitty's.

When I ate Franklin's I did the order to go where you have to order on the 1st day of the previous month from when you are picking it up. I don't have the time to devote to standing in line.

Franklin pick up order to go, if you order at least 5lbs you can pick up hot brisket in the mobile home thing outback.
No lines no waiting, they even give you free drinks as they slice your order. I mean when in Texas you have to drink one of those nasty big red sodas.

La Barbecue is the best to me. Franklin is worth the wait if you haven't been before. It's a religious experience. Valentina's is really good also.

Smitty's brisket is the GOAT

Louis Mullers in Taylor is my favorite. Great brisket and sausage.
Blacks in Lockhart is really good too. Huge beef ribs.
Coopers in Llano is good, sides are okay, but the meat is the main draw.
Rudy's is great for what it is: multiple locations, no wait, really good brisket and they serve beer. What's not to like?
Franklin is good, but I'd rather drive out to Taylor or Lockhart than stand in line.

It's worth the wait, imho. And coming from LSU, all y'all know whatsup with tailgating. Bring an ice chest and make a morning out of it. I totally get the argument that you can get damn good BBQ here without standing in a line; but, sometimes it's a fun social thing to do with a group of friends.

Kent Blacks BBQ in San Marcos is quickly moving the scene.
Moving the scene downhill, IMO. Kent Black's has great sides.
I was in Gil's Broiler one day and Kent was in there talking with Ruben (owner of Gil's) about how he does his meat, how the sausage is smoked in Lockhart and trucked over to San Marcos, etc. [csb]

Hay's County in San Marcos, TM Top 50. I'd put Hay's up against anything commercial in the state.
Snow's in Lexington. That woman knows her meat.

Is Franklin worth the wait or is it mostly hype?
Yes.
But the best option is a private party. $100/person, 50 person minimum, the restaurant is yours after hours, all you can eat and drink including desserts and when you are done, they package up the meat for anyone that wants some to take home.
Second best option is to preorder to go. 5# minimum, fills up weeks ahead of time, usually, but no waiting in a line.

Dang. Remind me to never order BBQ in SE LA. Rudy's bbq is consistent, I'll give them that, but it isn't good.

Speak like that about our big red sodas again and I'll shove one down your throat at your local Sonic.

It really is better than any BBQ I've had in Louisiana.
