Anyone have any experience with a beer of the month? I am looking to get started for a year and I didn't realize there were so many. I don't even know where to begin. Any recommendations, suggestions, or thoughts?

go to beer store

buy beer you've never had before

drink beer

repeat every month (I recommend you do it more often, though)

You will get mostly crap....However, most of them won't even ship to La anyway. Save your money and buy straight from a store.

I agree with this.

You might try and find a store that does a "pick six" type thing where you get to choose different beers as a six pack so you can sample more.

Or at least one that sells singles other than the big brewery ones.

Fresh Market does "pick your own 6 pack" for 8.50 which is the same price as Abita there. I think I am going to start doing it once a week starting this week.

I love doing this. You can try so much more knowing that you might get a "drain pour" from time to time, without wasting a whole 6.

You can also try ciders which I found I really like.

I agree with most of this thread... just stop by Calandro's or Marcello's or Fresh Market and pick out some new ones.

I'm on a mission to try 365 new beers this year, and there are plenty around town to go through.

I have only had Hornsby's and Woodchuck, what other brands or types are good? I usually get the regular woodchuck.

St. Bernardus Abt 12 or St. Bernardus Wit (wheat) are my two favorites right now.. you can get them at Calandro's.

Martin Wine Cellar has a St. Bernardus gift pack right now... the Pater 6, Prior 8, Triple, and Abt 12, plus a goblet.

The witbier is pretty awesome too, maybe the best witbier available.

Ace ciders are good, but I have only had them on draft at TacoMac here in ATL. You might have bottle distribution in your area.

Strongbow is a classic. Less fruity than Hornsbys or Woodchuck.

You can also "mix" it with Guiness for a great taste.

Yeah, it probably will only take a few trips to hit them all. I think Marcellos does it too.

You can buy any beer as a single. Whether it be 2 beers or 14. They have a pretty good selection.

I don't like how they have it all on display out in the open near the window though. I've never had a skunky beer yet but it scares me.

Hands down, my favorite is Samuel Smith's organic cider. Fricking phenomenal.

I recently canceled mine. Not worth the money. You get a lot of crap beer with an occasional really good beer thats not sold around here so you can't get anymore of it anyway

Alright, not worth it. I have had most beers in the stores and wanted to try something new/different and have a 12 pack at my door every month, but if it is crap beer at those prices I guess I'll think of something else.
Thanks.
