Roothog's in downtown. Probably going back to 2003

That was right about the time I moved to BR to go to LSU, so I really don't remember.

There have always been homeless around town, but it is certainly getting worse especially in the downtown area. the money pulled up and went out towards Youngsville plain and simple. They have fewer restrictions and don't have to deal with the Lafayette city council.

I haven't heard of anything happening on the Southside by the Mall which was side of town growing up. My folks are still there and haven't mentioned anything.

Winter is coming which will move some of them out. Others will commit small crimes and go to jail for 3-6 months which will keep them out of the cold. The city is in dire need of a new jail. The current jail was built to fit around 300 prisoners and now holds almost 800. (heard those numbers on KPEL the other morning sorry they are not 100% accurate)

There was a Mello Joy cafe that was near where Pamplona is. No longer there?

Correct, no foot traffic was the major issue. It wasn't cost effective to stay open. Also, the location was very small so there wasn't a lot of room for a eating area.

Between Johnston and Kaliste Saloom with so much new shopping, eating etc. They are there, looking for soft targets.

My office building is on Ambassador, and like I said earlier, there are several that live in a small patch of woods behind us.

This place is pretty strange. Trying to sell themselves as an upper end exclusive place with a baked potato bar

and their huge grand opening announcement was the chee weezs were playing

That's a no go zone for me. I avoid driving or going through there like the plague. Traffic is terrible in that area. I know that wooded area you are talking about now.

that "beer garden" area is commonly known as "Hippie alley"

during Festival and on weekends lots of freeks congregate and partake in illegal drug use

I too avoid downtown like the plague , occasionally grab some groceries at Dwyer's or the French Press as YF mentioned

Love beer, love beer gardens, love brats, etc. etc. I'll never go to it because of the location.

The other element that is been creeping in since 2013 is the dindu element. I know a few folks who've been jumped on the way back to their cars after dark.

Developments like this have the potential to drive out undesirable elements. I don't know why some in this thread are knocking it. Someone has to start things and get desirable consumers to the area during the day and at night. Bars can do this. That's not to say things can't go south, but if someone is willing to drop some money and bring in something positive, I say go for it.

a 'new' bar is not allowed in the downtown area unless it was a bar already. Don't think they will be issued a bar permit from the powers that be.

Bumping this because I saw on the internets that they will officially open today at 5.

I know they were open for Festival International but I guess that was on a temporary permit.

Prices were obnoxious for festival, but that was because of festival, I suppose. My new place is literally 2 blocks away, so I will be there very often.

Homeless/Bum <> Hipster.

What you need to worry about is unicycle riders and a restaurant opening up that serves canned seafood.

You can keep the hipsters out by calling the new beer garden , "Hipster Hangout". No hipster would ever hang out at a place with a name like that.
