I'm going to Chapel Hill in a few weeks to visit my daughter and to help send her off to New York.

The wife and I would like to stop in Asheville for a couple of days to relax and unwind before flying back to Austin.

Can you recommend some restaurants and breweries we should check out. Also, it doesn't have to be the best beer in town, but if any breweries or beer bars that have a spectacular view of the mountains or the French Broad, that would be ideal.

Be sure to hit Merritt's for the best BLT on sourdough you've ever had.

I highly recommend the Village Hotel at The Biltmore. That's a place to really relax and unwind.

Wicked Weed has a really cool facility with great food in addition to the already great beer.

I'm going to monitor this closely -- my wife and I decided last night we're going up to Asheville for our anniversary in November. We're going to spend a few days and hit the Biltmore and some of the breweries.

I found these threads last night:

I almost feel like this board needs a stickied Asheville thread.

Wicked Weed, Hi-Wire, Burial, Green Man, Wedge, Asheville Brewing are all good. The new New Belgium location is open now on the river, and I've heard the Sierra Nevada facility (nearby) is phenomenal.

I'm sure I'm missing a few... the first group are all walkable to each other except maybe Wedge, which is close to New Belgium but opposite bank of the river.

Wicked has 3 facilities. The brew pub is the original location. I highly recommend it. They have pretty awesome beers and food. Like the other guy said, Hi-wire and Green Man are awesome. Sierra's facility is nothing short of amazing. You can go out there and hang out for a day. Haven't been back since NBB facility opened, hopefully I'll get up there soon to see it, but i can't offer anything on that. Biltmore is a beautiful place and if your wife or you are into wince, take the wine tour. I've heard that there is a trip you can take on Kayak's between NBB, Sierra, Wicked's production facility, and Oscar Blues but haven't found anything on it.

Wedge is probably closest to the river, but not really close enough to have a view. I've been to most and none really have much of a view, unless you want to people-watch.

The New Belgium "Liquid Center" has a deck overlooking the French Broad River. There's always a food truck in the parking lot.

That would be pretty badass... but isn't the Oscar Blues facility a good bit south? Like several hours worth of kayak/canoe paddling?

That's the only one that was open when I went, and yes it was awesome... we went to the downstairs tap room first and then made a point to go back another day to sit upstairs and have some food and drink.

I've been told that Sweeten Creek and Blue Ghost are two newer breweries that are worth a visit.

Just got back from Asheville. As others have said Wicked Weed has great beer and food. Funkatorium, Burial, and Wedge are breweries I would recommend. Sierra Nevada's facility is amazing and something worth seeing. New Belgium is nice but more of a modern type facility, not that that's a bad thing, I just like the feel of the other breweries better.

Like others have said, Wicked Weed, Funkatorium, Burial, and Sierra Nevada are must visits. If you have time, Wedge and Hi-Wire.

Food wise, I'd recommend breakfast at Biscuit Head and tacos at White Duck.

And, as always, women love the French Broad Chocolate Lounge.

Altamont is a good spot, too. Laid back and not as much of a tourist spot as some others. They also have taps from other local/regional brewers. Within walking distance of the UJ, which makes a fine burger.

Just got home from One World Brewery in downtown Asheville about a half block off Pack Square. No views, it's in the basement below Farm Burger, but great staff and good selection of beers.
