Is it really that much better than, say, Makers Mark?

Maker's doesn't have enough rare in it.

I'm not sure what that means.

I like mine medium rare anyway so regular Maker's is good enough for me.

Yes, I believe it is smoother than Maker's. Not much, and certainly not worth the extra $$$.

I saw a documentary on Kentucky bourbon this past week and a guy who runs a bourbon bar here in Los Angeles said basically the same thing. But never having tasted Pappy's, it made me wonder.

Surprisingly, Gallo carried an excellent line of wines for awhile. I don't see their wines as often anymore, but in the early 2000's the Gallo zinfandel was a very good wine at a nice price.

But I get your point.

You should be able to find a bourbon bar over there and do a tasting. In Baton Rouge, 15,20 & 23 year old will run ~$125. If you don't normally drink bourbon, don't start with Pappy, visit the bourbon thread for where to start...

I had a glass of Pappy 23 served once within spitting distance of awesome barbecue and Julian himself. It was awesome bourbon for sure, but really it was the whole scene made it pretty awesome. Cost was $50.

I had some Pappy 23 at Christmas. I felt like a king but can't say that the drink was really that great.
