I'm figuring 5-6 pounds per person so 3 Sacks should be perfect. Am I completely wrong here?

Depends on the makeup of the group, but it's a good starting point IMO.

Out of 20 ?are they all men? Half Men and women? Kids?

If it's a mixed group you can bank on a few who won't eat it at all.

I would day 3-4 lbs per adult.

Most women I avg 3-4 lb each. Men I avg 5-6 lb each. Kids are 3-4 maybe.

But yeah 3 sacks should be enough. If you are worried you are under estimating, buy some more sausage and potatoes.

Like others have said, it depends on who these 20 people are and how well you know of their crawfish eating habits. If this is in south LA and everyone eats crawfish on the regular, then 3-5 lbs per person.

I usually make a spreadsheet and guess the amount I think each person will eat, then order based on that. Usually 3 lbs for Women and 5 or slightly more for men. For newbies, i do 1-2 lbs.

Unless your women are Heffers they ain't eating an average of 3lbs. When you add in corn and potatoes maybe 2 lbs. A few baws may destroy 5-7 lbs.

I always over buy, like others have said if it's women and kids too people will likely not eat as much. I would bet 2 sacks would be plenty

We had 10 people this weekend and got 2 sacks, totaled 65 lbs which is more than 5 lbs per person. There were no crawfish left and I promise people could have kept eating. So definitely 3 sacks and make sure it is at least 5 lbs per person unless a lot of those 20 are kids or people who don't eat a lot of crawfish. All 10 of us were adults and we all ate as much as we could.

Half of the people were women, by the way. They easily ate their share but we also didn't gorge on potatoes and corn. That's what we had a lot of leftovers of.

Your average group will come out to about 3-3.5 lbs per person in my experience.

I can eat about 5- 6 lbs of crawfish. If they're on the small side, I get tired of peeling them before I get to that amount, sometimes. If they're large and I'm getting claw meat, I may eat a little less. I almost never eat the corn or potatoes at all. If there's sausage, I will likely eat some of that, but not a lot. If there are interesting other sides from the boil, I might taste some of those, but it's all about the crawfish for me.

Last Friday I boiled 103 pounds for 16 people and had about 10 pounds left over, I'd boil 4 sacks. Also, if you serve on trays people will eat less, dump them on a table and they'll eat more.

ETA: We had 3 kids under 13, 8 men and 5 women. Averaged 5.6 #s per person. I guess we some proffesionals.

I think a safe assumption is 5lbs a person but then you don't want to run short so if you plan 10 lbs a head you have a good cushion for big eaters and unexpected added guests.

worst case is you will have enough for everyone to take some home or for you to eat over the next few days

Has to be a trolling right?

That said its more about how long you are going. If you know people will be there the entire time you are boiling get the extra sack. However, if you think half the crowd will leave early then don't go extra. Nothing worse than soaking that last batch when everyone is leaving and its just you and your buddy left.

If it is mixed company, and you have beer and fixins, 2 sacks would be enough IMHO FWIW
