"I don't see water, so I'm going to stay, " said Kim Krantz, who nevertheless packed up everything in her two-story house on the vulnerable south side of town. "When I see water, I'll get out. It's that simple."

I sure hope Kim's planning on using a boat to leave.

Who does rooftop rescues this far inland? Is it still the Coast Guard? I hope so for the sake of the folks staying behind, the Coast Guard rocks.

She wants to stay and get flooded and write a book, or have a storm story written about her.

Who knows.

At least the basin has a high level of boat ownership.

I can remember trying to convince my 80+ year old grandfather to evacuate the north shore for Gustav. OMG that man is so stubborn, I had no idea. Mom had always said what a stubborn mean bastard he was but I guess he always put on his happy face for the grandkids - then his 50 year junior grandson tries to tell him what's best for him and his wife (at the request of my mom and aunts) and - boom - explosion!

Some folks just can't be told what's best for them. They are typically people who have been self-reliant all their lives and they don't want to relinquish any control, even if its in their best interest.

She ain't in much danger. If the water comes up on the south side of Krotz Springs, she can just wade over the 100 yards to the ring levee that surrounds the town. Besides that, the National Guard is building a temporary levee around the south side. They did this in '73, and after the flood, people just dug it up and used it for fill.

That is a natural fact. If you show up there right now and they just don't recognize you, you might get shot.

Incidentally, I note that the article is all about the Morganza Spillway, yet they show a picture of the Old River control structures. :banghead: :banghead:

Its 34 picture gallery, many of which are pics of the Morganza

But yes - the quality of publishing on NOLA.com could stand some improvement.
