Have a good idea going into the draft how much you're going to spend at each position. Notice I said "position" and not "player."
So, if you're planning on spending $90 on both your WR1 and WR2, and you end up getting your WR1 for $50, you know you have $40 left to play with for your WR2. Same goes for RB1 and RB2.
If you end up overpaying at a position, it's easy to make adjustments elsewhere on the fly, and if you pay less than what you were expecting, you know you have more room to maybe spend more at a different position than you were expecting.

I tend to disagree with some of the earlier posts. I would advise to let the top 20 players go off the board, be patient, then wade into the draft. You'll be able to build a deeper team with this method and have a higher likelihood of making the playoffs.
Focus on 2nd tier guys like Mike Evans, Brandon Marshall, Alshon, DT... On the RB side you'll have the Murrays, Forte, Lamar Miller, McCoy, Charles.
If you go big ($60+) you'll need more savvy late in the draft.

Try a few mocks with that strategy and see where that comfortable 'wade in' spot is, I like the $40 WR range.

I only do auction drafts now. My advice is to pick the players you like and go get them. Nothing worse than ending up with a team you don't like because you let someone else spend an extra dollar on players you like.

That's the exact opposite of what good, big money league participants think and do.

What if the 2ndtier guys are nominated in the top 20?
Posted on 8/8/16 at 10:22 am to Lester Earl
A few will be nominated usually, and subsequently purchased well above value by excited participants.

Nominate the kicker you want with your first pick and hope you can get him for $1

Or nominate the guys you don't want that a lot of people are calling "sleepers" (although I don't know if "sleepers" exist anymore with the wealth of information out there these days). People will be thinking they can be cute and get them for a steal at the end of the draft, and it might throw their strategy off to see them posted early.
A good example of this would be Sterling Shepard.

If you want a WR1, it's better to go after him early than late. Got Julio for what I thought was a kings ransom, but then I saw what the last guy left that was considered a WR1 went for and felt a lot better

Racking up the downvotes for recommending to avoid $60+ players, can I get an invite to yalls leagues?

The only problem with your strategy is its the one most employed in a seasoned league. Which leads to everyone bidding up on those mid tier guys. So if they keep going for more than you want to spend, then next thing you know you're stuck bidding on guys you don't really want
As for leagues, we had openings in TDFL. I was the highest scoring team out of 24 and I spent on $180 on leveon, Julio, and Dez.
Still boils down to knowing the players, both in the draft and when adding throughout the season. These dudes want to mock draft and think they know what's going on.. That's akin to having the answers to the test. Ya still gotta know the material if you want to pass the final

That's fair. I was just trying to present the counter argument to, "if you like them, go get them." I usually find people are overexcited and bid way over value early, just my experience.

Also, if that's how you spent 90% of your budget, I'm sure you had a plan in place for picking up sleeper/upside guys late which is exactly the point I made... If you go big early, you'll need some savvy late in the draft. Is that the best route for a new auction player? I'm not sure.

A more balanced roster could look like this (using avg ADVs)...
QB Big Ben $8
RB McCoy $39
RB DeMarco $12
Flex Jarvis Landry $24
WR D Thomas $36
WR K Allen $34
TE Olsen $19
Then you'd have $28 left to build depth. You could even grab one more strong flex like a Latavius Murray or Danny Woodhead. You have less injury risk and more flexibility.

He only got real value out of one. It's a testament to how well he managed his team last season.
On the flip side, I finished 4 of 24 in total scoring and the most I spent for any player was $42 - both for Nuk and JMatt.
Auction success can be had in many ways. I stand my my original advice though - don't get too fancy bidding up players you don't want, you could get stuck. My auction failures have mostly stemmed from that alone.

I bid up Luck last year and got stuck with him
Posted on 8/8/16 at 4:08 pm to Byron Bojangles III
I did the same with Shady in another league and it threw me off my game. Never recovered.
There is nothing wrong with bidding up players to extract some $$$ out of other owners, but pressing too much can equal trouble. The most savvy owners know that line and enforce it. The rest should be cautious IMO.
