The team that scored the 3rd most points scored 150 points less than my team.

But wait, there’s more. All I needed to do was win one of the last three games down the stretch to secure a playoff spot. Each of the last 3 weeks my team scored the 2nd most points in the league for that week. Second only to……you guessed it…..my opponent.

But wait, there’s more. Last week I lost by 7 points with Tee Higgins in my starting lineup and Aiyuk on the bench. If Higgins is ruled out before the game starts, I plug Aiyuk in, get his 13 points and secure a playoff berth.

Similar situation in one of my leagues. Missed the playoffs and had second most points in my league. Needed one more win bc I easily had the tie breaker over the 5th and 6th seed. Lost one of my games during the season by 2 points where I played against Herbert and he didn’t convert on a garbage time 4th down td and refs gifted him another attempt on a bogus call and he got it. Lost the last game before playoffs because the worst team in the league had his best week. That was all she wrote

I hold 3rd place going into the playoffs in my work league of 12 teams.

I have the 4th worst scoring roster.

But I've been scored on the least in our league.

ESPN you can set it on bonus wins each week

You get win or loss for you match
Then the top half of the league in scoring for the weekend gets a W and the bottom half gets an L

So each week you can go 2-0, 1-1, or 0-2

This corrects the luck of schedule somewhat

I missed the playoffs one year (12 team/ 6 team playoff). My team was the highest scoring team but I also had the most points scored against me.

Over the last few years, we have changed our league to leave the last playoff spot for the highest scoring team that dosent qualify by record.

Ex: 6 teams make playoffs, top 5 by record, 6 th spot is top scoring team not in the top 5 record wise.

Seems like it has been a very good change and avoids a situation as OP finds himself in.

For me, in a league I really care about, having been on a site since 2004..

I had a 7 point YTD lead going into last Monday night, but needed 11 from Hollywood to keep the high score. Missed it by 3 points. Titans D gave me a big fat 0. Had some others I coulda flexed. All that work for the year and it came down to 3 points. Along the way, had I kept the KC or Jets Ds, I'd have won. But thought the Titans were a great playoff D.

Blessed to have entered the playoffs 13-1 and a W15 bye, so there's that, but I don't think I win the playoffs because some other teams are surging and I feel like I have some gaps. Well, injuries happen. Having lost Kupp and Hall didn't help.

Feels like a ton of hard work for nothing.

that's why we play an extra game against the median. all those weeks you'd have gone 1-1 instead of 0-1

We have a guy who complains about playing top point. Unlike you though, he's like 10th out of 12 in scoring.

I was top scorer in a dynasty (won some money for it) and missed the playoffs one year. The kicker is it was a league with a median. Just had a few weeks where my team absolutely went off but it wasn’t consistent and I had bad matchup luck.

And just in case you don’t believe me because people make shite up all the time, here is a screenshot of the standings that year, I was in 7th at 13-13. I removed names because they give identities away.

Walrus, you hit the nail on the head. Consistency is important. Scoring points doesn’t tell the whole tale. You have to do it consistently

Yeah I think people overstate what points scored tells us. If your team score 250 100 100 and goes 2-4 it’s not the same as going 150 150 150 and 5-1. shite teams go off in random weeks all the time.

And you know that I don’t even like the H2H component.

Top6 is by far the best and fairest system. It rewards consistency while also eliminating completely random weekly H2H matchups described in the OP.

I ended season 4th in points (12 man league) and snuck into playoffs this past week to play a #1 seed consisting of Jefferson, Kelce, Jacobs, Allen and Waddle.

I got 20 last night from Aaron Jones and we ended up in a tie. It was understood that tie breakers went to team with more bench points, which I had, so we assumed I won.

Nope, wake up this morning and the setting in ESPN had "higher seed" advancing for a tie...something none of us knew including commish.

Big fat L for me.

All of my leagues use this format. It's not perfect but removes the bad luck of the schedule randomization. All you can control is what roster you put out there, not what other teams put up against you.
