This is floating around my Facebook now.
Now half the country is racist because they're struggling to make ends meet... Idiots.

Nearly 60 million people voted for Donald Trump. Boiling this election down to all of them being stupid racists who aren't worth talking to is, however, exactly what got Trump elected. White supremacy isn’t something to be compromised with, but it’s important to try to understand the complex entanglement between the working class’s economic woes and white nationalism. Although his promises were vacuous (even if he could magically bring manufacturing jobs back in an increasingly automated world, it wouldn’t solve any of the problems with wage stagnation), Trump’s message to the Rust Belt in particular was clearer and more relatable than what Clinton was offering (which wasn’t really emphasized at all in her campaign). These Rust Belt voters presumably weren’t all virulent racists, but rather were drawn toward Trump's simple message. Our path going forward should be to empathize with their root woes that made this message appealing to them. I have no idea how to better explain to Rust Belters that raising the minimum wage, guaranteeing affordable (or free) college education, and guaranteeing health care is a solution that will almost definitely serve them far better in today’s economic and globalized climate, but it’s clear that Clinton’s message wasn’t sufficient and made too many assumptions about their support.
White nationalism and economic woes will be very, very difficult to disentangle, in that while white nationalism can arise from economic woes, this is with a backdrop of already extant xenophobia. Ascribing this purely to incorrigible bigotry to be screamed down is easy, but getting to the root of this horrendous positive feedback loop and finding how to better empathize and communicate is crucial.

I'm confused. Where was all this racism when Obama was elected twice?

Let them keep thinking this way, we are entering a post racial era, this is the country that elected a black man to the presidency twice. That issue is off the table as unique thing for a candidate.

Front page of Vox right now is precisely why Trump won.
A bunch of black framed glasses-wearing white hipsters in Brooklyn talking shite to the rest of the country about how backwards they are.

You remember Les Miles? You remember how he kept running the football into 9-10 man fronts? You remember how we begged and pleaded for him to change?
These people aren't going to change their playbook overnight after 8 years of arse beating.

every word of that is exactly why she lost. they are doubling down on their smugness and soft racism instead of backing off from it. they don't want to unite, no matter how many pundits and first ladies reading speeches someone else wrote tell us they do.

They were both white men. How can that be racist?

Not how I took that. I took it as "dismissing Trump voters as racists is foolish and pushed them away from our side". Which is correct. There's real economic hardship in the Rust Belt. And voters there punish the party in power, just like they did in 2008. The economic message doesn't work because Obamacare doesn't work. Raising the minimum wage to $15 doesn't appeal to people who are already making $15-$17. They know they'll get nothing at all but will have a higher cost of living.
A big reason Hillary lost that they didn't address is she played prevent defense the entire campaign. From a safe, boring running mate to limited campaign activity, she seemed content to stay in the background and let Trump shoot himself in the foot.

In the closet. Gays got to come out so it's only logical that the racists would follow.

Sounds like racism and struggling white people are bride and groom.
