re: I was blown away by the Asheville beer scene

I moved to Western NC for my last summer in college, a small mountain town 30min west of Asheville called Waynesville. This is where I learned to love craft beer. In college you could get most of the typical beers outside of the mega breweries, but rarely local beers. In Western NC every small town has at least 1 brewery, its amazing.
When you go into Asheville, or the other small towns, local beer is all the local people drink, that is how they are able to sustain the business. Tourist help as well. The only other beer they drink is PBR.
Speaking of PBR, yes Asheville has a lot of smelly hippies. Its a problem for sure. The best way to combat that is to live in the outlying areas. There is so much outdoor activities to do in the area that you don't need the big city. Beer is prevalent all over.
For anyone considering visiting, swing by Adam Dalton Distillery. Adam is a friend of mine. He has local beer as well as his own concoction of distilled rums.

Asheville sounds like a place I would enjoy. What is it about Ashevill that attracts the breweries? I mean, as opposed to other metro areas in NC?
Asheville is an east coast version of a mountain west college town. It's a much smaller version of Austin that actually has mountains and outdoor opportunities.
Artsy, outdoorsy, etc. It's a good visit.

Lot of butthurt bitching in here. I've been to Asheville once or twice (ha) and I'll take their hippies over the NOLA homeless people all day every day. At least the Asheville folk leave you alone. And maybe they smell, but it's mostly just grass and patchouli oil. It doesn't smell like they shite their pants last week and have been marinating since then.

We took my two teenagers there along with my niece and nephew. I told them all that I would be disappointed if at least one of them didn't seriously look at Western Carolina for college.

Cullowhee is about as far from Asheville is BR is from NOLA, and unlike BR, Cullowhee has literally no redeeming qualities. It literally doesn't even have a grocery store. You have to go to Sylva, the next town over, for that. If you're basing your college decision on awesome places to live, there are better options. And also, it's basically begging your kid to go drink in Asheville and then drive home to the Whee on that curvy arse highway. You're begging for a DUI or a death in the family.
But I love Asheville.

Try Appalacian State. Boone is sort of mini-Asheville. Of course, I don't think it's that great a school as I understand it. I guess it's basically comparable to W Carolina, though.

Fair. And App State is probably a better school than Western anyway. But it's not like those rankings of undergrad programs really matter.

Not speaking so much as to specific rankings, but more just to a value perspective if considering having to pay out of state tuitions.
As I derail my own thread.

Looking at both their websites, Western is $9511 while App is $10471 for out of state. Not ridiculously more expensive, and Boone is slightly cheaper to live than Cullowhee. It's really splitting hairs.

Then you're in the UNC system. Ugh
Posted on 7/8/15 at 8:37 am to Matisyeezy
Yeah, but you're IN Asheville.

Anywhere in the area would be good enough for me. Appy State or UNC Asheville would be fine.

Do they still do the drum circles?

Apparently, on Friday evenings.
Sadly, I missed it.

Yep. It's a lot of fun.

I had to Google what a drum circle is. And when I saw, I thought you were joking, but I realized Google finished my search to be "drum circle Asheville".. so I guess you were serious.
Interesting.
Interesting.
