I hadn't been through there in about three years and the transformation just since then is unreal.

Hit Sierra Nevada's facility first. As another local brew guy told us, it's like Willy Wonka's for beer. Place is gorgeous. They must have put a couple of hundred million into it. Nothing special beerwise - fresh Sierra Nevada - but great fresh, really thoughtful food menu, had charcuterie, steak tartare, and duck fat fries. Did a walking tour of the brewery, as the guided tours book up two months in advance.

Then, the Wicked Weed Funkatorium. Barrel aging sours and brets out the wazoo. Place is really doing a lot special. Loved the Oblivion and Red Angel.

Also hit Oskar Blues in Brevard, Wedge Brewing, Burial, Green Man, and Wicked Weed downtown. All jam packed on Monday and Tuesday. Wicked Weed was my favorite, but all were interesting in their own right.

Place is like Disney World for beer mavens. I don't know how they sustain it, but it's still growing apparently.

Went two years ago and was blown away. That was before the SN facility was open (not sure about Oscar Blues) and definitely before the Funkatorium.

Agreed that Wicked Weed was the favorite, with Hi-Wire and Burial close behind. Burial more for the beer and Hi-Wire for the atmosphere (not that the beer was bad at all).

I was blown away by the horrendous smell of all the hippies in that town. Didn't try any beer.

Can comment that outside on one meal, the food is lacking too.

Farm Burger - good burger, lots of toppings, structured like Burger Smith. Have a lot of craft beer there. Bun is fresh, meat cooked perfect to temp and is good quality.

Also here the water is free range. There is a contribution.

I've been reading about how great the city is. Can't wait to visit.

Where did you all stay Y.A.?

The actual downtown of the city sucks arse. Nothing but dirty people just lounging around looking like shite.

But I would recommend finding a house for rent for a week. It is what we did and allows you more comfort and space than a hotel obviously. Helps save some money when you can cook breakfast or make sandwiches if you are going outdoors.

Go to Saluda one day, and go white water kayaking. Green River Adventures is the company we used, only a 30 minute or so drive from Asheville.

Biltmore Estate is huge, but I only drove through. Heard from people that toured that it was nothing special unless you want to see some old antique items and a gigantic house.

Go hiking in the Blue Ridge Parkway area.

Drive around and explore.

For a meal, I suggest Farm Burger downtown. I do not suggest the Chestnut downtown. Food was meh at best for the price and reputation it receives.

Oh and had a good Pretzel appetizer and beer at LAB , Lexington Avenue Brewery. Pretzels were homemade, big, fluffy, and perfectly cooked. Burgers at other tables looked good.

Seems like a good beer scene and lots of hippies tend to go hand in hand.

Sounds about right. We didn't even bother with the Biltmore when we went... it's also an expensive tour.

Toured the Biltmore 8 years ago, and didn't feel the need to do it again. Did get some hiking in the Pisgah in, though.

I didn't find the food "lacking", but didn't really make it the focal point. Had a nice meal at Rhubarb.

The Asheville dirty hippies were less bothersome to me than the N.O. gutter punks. They also don't have the other side of the underclass who I had to worry about shooting me. So there's that.

I agree with the amazing beer scene and the plethora of smelly gutter punks. I think the food overall is pretty good. The brewery's I've been to all seem to have great pub type food. The nicer places are just ok. Ate at Chestnut last week and was not that impressed.

Farm burger is a tasty burger. I like the Cuban/messican joint over there by it too. Can't think of the name.

You probably should stay away from Portland, then. The food scene is good.

Asheville sounds like a place I would enjoy. What is it about Ashevill that attracts the breweries? I mean, as opposed to other metro areas in NC?

The Biltmore was awesome. It's a must see if you haven't been before. Very impressive estate and history.

The beer scene there is incredible. There are too many cool things going on to list them all. We didn't spend a lot of time going to food places. Although, I was impressed with the Wood Fired Pizza place in Black Mnt, NC which is just outside Asheville.

Other breweries, would be my guess. They have becomes a bit of a beer lovers' destination.
