well, Nebraska went to a different conference, so that doesn't really apply.
When the Big-12 first came to be in 1996, Nebraska and Oklahoma were in different divisions and they stopped meeting annually. Nebraska didn't leave for the Big-10 until 2010.
Point is, the SEC doesn't have to give in to the decree by Alabama that they play Tennessee every year. Oklahoma and Nebraska stopped playing annually for the greater good of their conference structure and everyone lived to tell about it.

No perfect way to do this, my man.
It may NOT be perfect but it is fair. The current system is UNFAIR to Tennessee and others. Current setup is done for one of two reasons.
A. Favoritism
B. The people in charge are stupid.

Missouri gave up these rivalry with Kansas to join th SEC. aTm gave up their rivalriy with Texas

You either rotate two with no permanents, move teams to the opposite division to preserve favored match-ups, or go to a 9 game conference schedule (1 permanent cross, with two rotating).
Edit: In the age of season-opening neutral-site games, that 9 game conference schedule is made even more unlikely.

because they let in A&M at the same time as Missouri, and they didn't want to move an existing West team to the East to make room for both A&M and Mizzou in the West, so they sent Missouri to the East. You already know this.

Has it been considered to allow Ala/Tenn and Aub/Ga to keep their permanent cross divisional game and allow the rest to rotate? Would that be too hard or unfair somehow?

You don't need to do any of this. Get rid of permanent opponents across the divisions. They can still play each other outside of the conference if they'd like.

Correct... if the rivalries were so precious then gumps, arb, Tenn, Ga. should have been in the same division.
What's the point of east/ west divisions when you put Mo. in the east.

I'm pretty sure the Pac-12 does this, with the California schools (2 in each division) all playing each other every year, but no other permanent cross-division games. The SEC could certainly do it as well.

which makes it a more played rivalry than the one we have with Auburn.
